How to get the Best out of Oxlade-Chamberlain?

Mickydidit sparked a conversation about The Ox with this opening ….

““The Ox…..Discuss”
Has he improved?
Best position?In what system?
Out on loan?

images-4

Oz Gunner replied thus …..

“Ox is another toughie Micky! Midfield, wing,AM, Henry like striker…I haven’t the slightest of ideas. I see him becoming a Jovetic type player where his best is playing just off the main striker (god we have a few of those don’t we?!)

Loan? Nah, too good for that now. I think the pressure got to him this season (along with a few niggling injuries). He’ll be better for it though, he’s going to be an absolute gem. Those supporters who have slated him and listed him as ‘deadwood’ should be taken out back and disposed off.”

Whilst Gooner in Exile  had this to say

“I’’m with you Oz, a little high on expectation after end of last season and summer trip to Euro’s which meant late back for pre season, plus those injuries you mention. Plus all change at the club which must be difficult for youngsters who aren’t established. Especially when those players signed are going to take your potential starting spot away.

For me he is similar to Rooney with ball at feet and in terms of power. And I’m not sure Ferguson or England have ever used Rooney to his full potential. Back to goal does not suit them, picking the ball up and running at defenders from the middle third I think both canbe devastating, hence why my suggestion about Wilshere’s ideal position also includes him playing alongside Ox and Santi, they could have an awful lot of fun and all possess different attributes that would complement each other.”

Big Raddy believes that the Ox will have to wait at least another season to become a starting player. The only place I can see him is as Santi cover or on the left wing/midfield, which assumes the relegation of both Gervinho and Podolski.

Quite frankly, I cannot see why Mr Wenger spent so much money buying him when we have such a glut of attacking midfield players. Even allowing for the removal from the squad of the “deadwood” there is no place for OC.

The Ox’s best position appears to be the one Hodgson gives him in the England team – behind the main striker and slightly to the left. but as has been said, this is Podolski or Cazorla’s position in the Arsenal set up.

A loan seems unlikely and as such I predict a long period of riding the pine (on the bench) for young OC. He has huge potential and he clearly loves it at Arsenal but his patience will be tested.

Ox is in Second Season Syndrome.. I agree on a point GIE Maintained “For me he is similar to Rooney with ball at feet and in terms of power. And I’m not sure Ferguson or England have ever used Rooney to his full potential.”…. Coming to his Postion Best postion for him is behind the striker.. I say this because 1) he is not a striker but he has got a good shot (Remember two agaisnt Swasena Unfortunatly hit the woodwork) 2) He is very strong physically 3) he can beat the defenders and create oppurtunities for striker…..

    Raddy,
Love the format. Great idea grabbing some comments and tranforming into a conversation starter.
This recipe could serve the site well during these dark days. Thank you.
Ox. Should have been out on loan this season I think. A full season of playing time would really have done him the power of good.
There are some players that you can tell need nurturing and this requires time and patience on the part of the host club and its fans.
Many players with potential are simply not worth the effort in my book, as they have stinking attitudes.
Ox, as much as any player I remember, deserves this.
I am 100% in the Hodgson camp on this fellow

  3. Norfolk Gooner says:

    Good morning to you all,

I’m not sure about this loan business, there’s no guarantee that the loanee will get the playing time he needs and even if he does will playing for a “lesser” team really benefit him.

I don’t no the Ox’s best position right now, but in the future I think he may turn into a good central striker.

  4. The Ox could be epic in a red shirt in year to come .. The first time I saw him play, he had “Rooney” written all over him, Pace, Strength and eye for goal from such a young age. Loan? maybe .. But why loan him when we’ll probably need a large squad for Europa next season … :”””(

  5. Norfolk Gooner says:

Add a k and a w to the third word in the final paragraph and it may make a bit more sense :-)

  6. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Here are my rotational options:

    ………Giroud/to be bought

    Pod/Gerv Santi/Ox Theo/Gerv

    ……..Art/Coq Jack/Rambo

  7. Morning aa pals
Regarding the ox,his dad was a old style winger for those who can remember his dad Mark Chamberlain.
I would play him on the wing as IMO I think that’s his best position .
And I would play the pod up front so the young ox could run at defenders and get some crosses in .
He by no way the finished article he young and his time will come I’ve got older Arsenal shirts than him .
Loan him out no way he will get games and I’m sure he will be a star of the future.
Give him time lets not rush him like Michael Owen we seen what to much to young can do .
Mr Owen was finished by the time he was 27 and plopped from club to club like a tramp looking for a home.

    Much love

  9. Bennie says:

He’s NOT playing because he’s NOT good enough to start games. Its because the manager LOVES Ramsey so much. In my opinion, the OX would give us so much more if given opportunities to play, start ahead of Ramsey in the same position.

  10. richard says:

well all interesting but lets take a trip back to pre season match against cologne where we had the ox and coquelin as the two deep lying midfielders and cazorla as cam our ball from final third was good both ox’s and coquelins tackling was ok but they intercepted well and this may be a way of playing him

  11. Awal mayen says:

We normally like what is best for the club like what man. U usually did but do not make the club as abusines centre you arsene wenger.

  12. Wardy says:

why do we have the need to disect every littlle thing? Cant we just leave the lad to grow without all the presure?
Sure his forms been patchy, (at best i know) but the lad is still finding his feet.
The fact that nobody really knows where on the pitch his game is best suited highlights the problems he is having now.(DM/CAM/LW/RW/ST/CF have all been mentioned and muted.).
When he finally settles in a position that best suits him (traditional N10 for me) we will all see what a power house he could be.
Until then cant we just leave him be????

  13. GunnerN5 says:

    Hi Raddy,

I wondered how you wrote the article so quickly, very cunning.

Enjoy your trip to Italy – I hope it’s not snowing there?
It’s -6c and snowing here, with about 4″ on the ground, no signs of spring yet.

I say lay off the ox – and I’m not yoking….

  14. Bennie says:

We all know his best position. Attacking midfield. Right, left or central, but because all these positions r presently occupied with experienced players ahead of him, for me, Instead of playing Ramsey whom I can really describe his role or what’s special he adds to the team, I rather play the OX with Arteta and bench Ramsey.

We would be a much better team in an attacking sense and pose problems so difficult for teams to handle. He demonstrated against Milan that he can defend as well as attack with significant impact than Ramsey. Ramsey is one player of that Arsenal’s starting line-up who plays NOT on merit…but the manager’s love for him.

  15. GunnerN5 says:

    Bernie,

I have to disagree with your summation.

All on AA will know that Ramsey is not one of my favourite players but I must say that in the more recent past his performances have been first rate. He has added some defensive nous to midfield that we were sadly lacking and his boundless energy is a huge plus.

He’s still not one of our greats but nor can he be just written off as simply a Wenger pet.

  16. kelsey says:

    Raddy,
enjoy Italy hope the banks stay open ;)

The Ox must be the youngest or near youngest in the first team squad.

I think he is a natural replacement for Arshavin as basically a winger but also not afraid to cut inside andd have a shot,as shown twice last week. No need to loan him out, he will get more games.

  17. oz gunner says:

    @ BR

good idea for a post. That oz fellow sounds like an imbecile though…bin him!

    @ Wardy

Where’s the fun in that? I agree people need to lay off him but that’s what a blog is for after all (like minded Arsenal supporters sharing opinions and debating all things Arsenal).

  18. West ham moving to the Olympic stadium odd

  19. 1. Ox-C is a right-winger (wide midfielder)

    2. He can also play on the left-wing if required to, though he is predominantly right-footed. Podolski got injured and Gervinho was in Africa, and Rosicky…WHAT! Injured again?… Wait! We’ve still got Arshavin… and he’s better than Ox-C, or he was two seasons ago…

    3. Put Ox-C out on loan? He’s back-up to Walcott.
Walcott gets injured and… “Oh no.. why ever did Wenger loan out Ox?”

    4. Yeah, but we’ve got Mayaichi… oops… I forgot, Wenger loaned him out!

    5. The fact that he’s been used (albeit sparingly), and been on the bench too shows that he is actually required at the club that is ‘desperate’ for silver.

    6. kelsey @ 1.15pm… Yep!

  20. Big Raddy says:

Weird. Loads of hits, hardly any comments.

Thankfully those we have are very good.

I cannot agree with Richard that OC should play deep. He is a natural attacking talent, and should be used as such.

Kelsey. Banks are rubbish everywhere!! And when you say he is a r Arshavin replacement , do you mean as a permanent bench gnome?

  21. chas says:

Great to see Ox regaining some confidence, BR.

I can see him playing right across the midfield, especially in the attacking third. I also think he has goals in him. It’ll come.

    Happy belated birthday to Micky.

i mean what we thought Arshavin was going to turn out like. Ever so often I get visions of his 4 goals at Anfield even though we didn’t win.

I like Ox playing the winger role on the left. He’s good with the ball in terms of dribbling/skills and he’s good at picking out a pass for the striker.

Walcott send home from England camp injured in training.

  33. Norfolk Gooner says:

Groin injury picked up in training on Thursday, out for seven to ten days.

Why is it always Arsenal players who get injured on International duty?

  34. GoonerB says:

Great post Raddy. I have been bad at blogging for the last 2-3 weeks, being slightly snowed under with work stuff but this post tied in nicely with the Wilshere one as well (have been reading the posts but not found time for comments).

In short on the Ox I would play him as left side attack or central attack. I actually think he is less effective from the right. Some right footed players are just stronger from the opposite flank and there are many examples of great attacking wide players that were best from the opposite flank. How good would Pires have been if he played from the right? Possibly still good but maybe not as good as he was from the left. The Ox has a good shot on him and I can see a high goal tally from him as he develops if we play him centrally or left.

From your post the other day I still feel we need to build a team that has Wilshere at its heart. Can we get a team that is balanced and features Wilshere, Cazorla and the OX? I believe so but the defensive midfield position in front of the back 4 would be key to this.

I think AW is looking at a powerful DM for the summer but part of me still thinks that maybe another CD should be brought in and then use TV in that role in front of the back 4. He could form a trianglular defensive screen that I feel would be highly effective. His pace and natural aggression would see us close down a lot of the attacking opposition players in front of our defence, that we don’t always do currently. It would not make Arteta redundant as the natural need to rotate and players getting injured would require all our key players across a season.

We would not always need such a defensive DM like TV in every game but it would allow both Cazorla and Wilshere to play higher up the pitch with less danger to our defensive aspect. Then you can play Theo and the Ox off from either Falcao or Cavani, because we are obviously going to buy one of them in the summer, and have Giroud as an impact sub. The defensive triangle of BFG, Kos and TV would also likely allow our FB’s to get forward with less worry about exposure on the break.

Thats AW’s summer plans sorted then. My job is done so I will go for a quick celebratory pint and catch up with you all again later.

As I stated earlier – just as well we didn’t loan out Ox, should Walcott’s injury mean missing one or two games.

  36. weedonald says:

Watching the OX shoot from distance and hitting the crossbar twice in one game partially confirms my original humble opinion that he is a great attacking (wide) midfielder or even a winger with Walcott’s pace and Cazorla’s ability to strike from outside the penalty area. He is only 19 years old…..far too young to be written off or ignored. What did any of us know when we were 19….other than we were immortal! Give the kid time to find his preferred position and time to convince Wenger that he is suited there. Wenger doesn’t rate Ramsey any higher than the OX but his team building project has both of them eventually being regular first team starters. With the strength we have in midfield (Cazorla,Wilshere, Coqueilin, Ramsey, the Ox, Diaby,Arteta, Rosicky and Arshavin)…he’s got a waiting line to jump ahead of. I see him having far greater impact in the run-in and next season when presumably Arshavin, possibly Rosicky and Diaby are all permanently warming the bench or gone.

I wasn’t watching the England game – I was out on the razz and I’ve just got back and seen the scores.

Anyway, good to see Oxo score for England and Aaron score for Wales.

Sadly Bale just has a stomach virus. Eating too many bananas, probably…

  45. Gooner In Exile says:

It’s not any ordinary stomach virus, it was brought on by Rob the Chefs first attempt at perfecting the bechemel sauce.

Theo confirmed out for “7 to 10 days”. Which should mean he only misses the Reading game this weekend and will be back for WBA the following weekend.

  47. VCC says:

Morning Rocky. Hope your enjoying your time in England. That’s a shame Theo is out for the Reading game, I’m going to that one.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Giroud score yesterday as well as the Ox and Ramsey.

Shouldn’t we be calling Aaron ‘The Ram’ as he’s a full blooded Welsh male and it sounds good to have the Ox, The Ram, the Swerve and the Pod :P

  51. Hi VCC – see you at the Reading game then. I’d love to be doing some gardening but gardening in the snow is just no fun :(

  52. Hi Rasp – Arsenal.com isn’t updated yet with who did what in the internationals. I’ll have a hunt around for info. Have you seen The Ox goal yet?

Ramsey held his nerve with the pen, he definitely has courage, converting in an atmosphere like that is as we have seen in the past not easy.

  55. VCC says:

Hi Peaches……Look forward to seeing you and the gang at the Tavern next week.

Meeting Terry and GLiC beforehand also. Can’t wait.
