Arshavin is Gone

This comment about Andrey Arshavin, made to Sky Sports by Nigel Winterburn (apparently), speaks volumes about his future at Arsenal:

“It does look at times that he doesn’t want to be in this country and I think the way that the winning goal was set up for Manchester United – you expect a player in that position to have focus and make it hard for the winger.”

For the manager to (a) effectively blame Arshavin for Manchester United’s winner and (b) speculate that he is not happy in England is a clear statement that the pocket Russki’s time at the Emirates is up.

It is unlikely he will go before the end of January (although I would not be completely surprised if that happened). But there is no way he will be here for the start of next season.

And when you factor in the damaging psychological impact of the booing that accompanied his appearance in Sunday’s game, his departure may be best for all concerned.

It’s bad timing for little Andrey, what with panto season coming to an end and all that, but no doubt we’ll make a few bob on him when he goes (or a few roubles, more likely).

It’s sad, really.

I know that the majority of the booing was directed at the boss and his decision to remove our most dynamic attacking player rather than at Andrey himself, but it still must have felt to Arshavin like a knife in the guts.

Or as if someone had stolen his plate of borscht.

For a man whose confidence was already lower than John Terry’s morals, it just served to push him further into the rut he’s been in for the best part of a year.

In the past I have written posts speculating that Andrey was about to rediscover the form that saw him put four goals past Liverpool at Anfield; that he would fire into life and be the secret weapon to catapult us to silverware; that the departure of Fabregas and the Fat French Benchwarmer would provide the perfect opportunity for him to step up and fill the “class” gap.

I was wrong.

As secret weapons go, Andrey has proved to be as deadly as a sawn-off bath bun. And there’s been no firing into life – just more and more damp squibbery (not to be confused with damp squillacery, which is a whole other category of offence).

However, I don’t think that Arshavin’s poor form is solely down to lack of confidence and/or homesickness.

For some reason a lot of Russian players seem to peak early (around the age of 30). Andrei Shevchenko was the best striker in the world when he joined Chelsea, but quickly became an also-ran.

Sergei Rebrov was also a very good player before he went to the Theatre of Screams, but never achieved a high level there or afterwards. Pavlyuchenko remains a bit part player.

And even though Arshavin is captain of Russia, his performances for the national side have attracted a lot of criticism in his homeland over the last two years.

In other words, I think he is over the hill; he will be 31 in May and his powers are waning. Some top players can stay at a high level well into their 30s, but not many Russians do.

Arsène Wenger, with all his statistics and record-keeping, must know this and will surely offload him while we still might get some money for him.

He was a great signing when he arrived and he has given us some fantastic moments (that goal against Barcelona will live for ever in the memory) but it is time to say “do svidaniya”*.

  1. I hope he leaves in this window, since last year i wanted this to happen, now it Squizz after that assist to Zamora in that Fulham we should just release him from his contract. If AA23 has no buyers either do the same

  2. Rasp says:

A sad but prophetic post Rocky. I am unhappy with the way AW criticised Arsh in public and I’m afraid there may have been an element of deflecting focus from ‘the substitution’.

The PR statement by RvP and the smokescreen of the phantom illness and the story that he had asked to be taken off all suggest that there is a mini coverup in process.

I have to agree that AA should go and hopefully it will be best for the little Ruski too. I really like the fella but his performances of late have been peppered with nonchalant flicks and only spasmodic efforts to defend. At his best he was a genius for us.

I shall forever be grateful to him for that goal against Barca and whenever he leaves, it will be with my best wishes.

  4. pat says:

Yep Rocky I think his time is up He is not over the hill – just seems to be over playing for us. Lacks desire I don’t think there is much physically wrong with him…

Booing is not productive but seeing the hope of the future in Ox and the display he put on and to see him be replaced by Arshavin who time after time after time looks disinterested and lazy is just too much. I cant exactly remember my reaction specifically (it was about 630am NZ time coffee wasnt quite kicking in) but it was probably along the lines of “WHAT THE *^*&^*&##!@!!”

Someone mentioned stress that is on Mr Wenger and I think it must be getting too much for him. Public airing is probably not the best given the nature of the press etc, but he has to be able to take criticism and feedback. He needs support but he has to be able to take that. People get tired of seeing the same thing happen over and over. We have seen enough of Arshavin and yes he cannot be carried in the team as a passenger any more it is simply not good enough.

Theo aint exactly tearing the pitch up at the moment as well – I believe he could turn things around but he and a couple of others do need a real rocket up the backside. Again not good enough.

However taking the positive – Arsene did make a good sub at half time taking DJ off and putting Yenaris on. As many others have said we need a LB to get Verm back in the middle and fill in for Gibbs given that he isnt back and is vulnerability to injury. We will need the depth in the CBs for the FA / CL and rest of the PL comps as an injury / suspension there will make things even more difficult. Red zones everywhere!

    Rant over!

  5. Rasp says:

    SATV,

You make a good point. As I see it there are 3 options as to what to do with the likes of Vela, Denilson, Almunia, Squillaci and Diaby.

    1. Try to sell them for any amount.

    2. Let them run out their contracts if they can’t be sold.

    3. Offer them a new contract at a vastly reduced salary that any potential buyer would be prepared to match or better.

  6. Rasp says:

    Hi pat,

Good comment. There are 4 players who we absolutely must play against Villa I’d say – Yennaris, Miquel, The Ox and Park. They may well be needed in the next few weeks and would benefit from time on the pitch. I’d also like to see Ryo if he’s fit. I’m not going to keep going on about it, but obviously Frimpong would have played in the game.

  7. Morning AAers :)

Fully agree with you Rocky, time for Andrey to return to the motherland, and your point about Russians no longer peforming well after the age of 30 might well be true. I have noticed over the years that foreign players have mixed levels of success in the PL, depending on their country of birth. Russians have indeed had disappointing careers in the PL and, to some extent, the same goes for other Eastern European countries.

Arsenal’s best ‘hunting grounds’ have been France and Holland, and Belgium – situated in between – might be a new suitable supplier-country. After Hleb and Arshavin we should learn the lesson and stay away from the far European-East.

  8. pat says:

No Hanibal, the title is the author’s view on AA’s future.

  11. GM, best wishes to you and your family.

  12. Wonderman says:

Morning Rocky , great post for debate. I was listening to talksport yesterday when they spoke to their Russian correspondent ( you may still be able to listen via their site). Amongst other things he claimed that Arshavin was viewed as being overweight for at least two seasons, and that the general feeling over there was that the premiere league was now too quick for his current abilities and he would be better served returning home.He also alluded that Arshavin lacked motivation .

I believe that the seed was planted in the FA cup semi against Chelsea when he was benched inexplicably. If I had my way I would sell him now and give someone like Sanchez Watt a chance . It is hunger that we are lacking, and for all his ability Arshavin is no longer hungry

  13. pat says:

@Rasp Any options available for a Frimpong recall from loan? I also heard he got injured in the last Wolves game.

Also during the Man U game i was &*$@ my pants when I saw Sczezny in pain after that collision – it was a rib / chest issue but I feared he had busted his hand or something….

I wonder what the reaction would have been if we stuck Ryo on for Ox in “that substition” – totally different I suspect. Would have been interesting – I say bring him on – at least it would mean we are trying something different.

  14. LB says:

Can someone clear something up for me? When did Wenger say: “It does look at times that he (Arshavin) doesn’t want to be in this country.” I saw the post match interview and this was not said then. I saw Gary Neville say it and thought he was just being a muck raking wanker but I am a bit more concerned that one of the respect authors on this site has said it happened, so if it wasn’t post match, when was it?

  15. Double98 says:

I know it was talked about yesterday – but the Arsenal boo boys are a disgrace..

Arshavin was not a Wenger buy – he was a board buy thrust upon wenger – Sure Arsene liked aspects of his game but i don’t believe he wanted to pay so much for him.
Arshavin is a central player who can’t play on the wing – Arsene has stuck him on the wing because he has no room for him in a 4-3-3.
I know i harp on about formation but we don’t have the right players for a 4-3-3

  16. Red Arse says:

What a brilliant Post, again, Rockydemius!! :-)

No matter what the subject matter, even the demise of Rasp’s meerkat, you make it a gripping read! Excellento.

  17. Rasp says:

    Hi pat,

I don’t know, if there is a mechanism to recall him, we haven’t taken advantage of it. Frimpong took a very nasty kick to the face at the weekend and had to be stretchered off but in typical fashion he was tweeting a few hours later and sayng he hoped the perpetrators foot was OK. he’s an unrefined beast and we could do with his strength in midfield.

  18. Rasp his performance of late, he has been performing so about 2 years know, in the Barca game he just got lucky a defender almost block it

and when he came down the pitch he foul a guy in the box

  19. pat says:

    @Wonderman

“he claimed that Arshavin was viewed as being overweight for at least two seasons”

I hope that isn’t true because in my eyes that would be intolerable at this level of a football club. Kinda cycles around back to the motivation but then that should be managed too – if not motivated then you should go and be unmotivated somewhere else.

However like all my opinions this is all keyboard warrior stuff and wouldn’t have a clue what is really going on in the dressing room / training pitch / boardroom etc.

  20. The New Invincibles says:

  21. LB says:

“Arshavin was a board buy thrust upon Wenger”……..come on, you know that doesn’t happen.

  22. kelsey says:

    RL,

I love your posts and as I mentioned earlier I don’t think that the russian is the only problem in the squad.

Would SAF have perserved so long with the little man. he has undoubted skill, but though I take your point that Russians over 30 don’t have the staying power, that maybe mainly due to the PL pace.Body language is not always a giveaway, but he does give this feeling that he is not bothered and certainly doesn’t give the impression that he is proud to wear the Arsenal shirt.

  23. kelsey says:

    LB,

    Wenger speaking on Skysports

“I never believe that a player goes on to the field of play and doesn’t try, but I must admit that when you look from the outside it is looking as if he’s completely lacking in confidence.

“It does look at times that he doesn’t want to be in this country and I think the way that the winning goal was set up for Manchester United – you expect a player in that position to have focus and make it hard for the winger.

  24. Red Arse says:

    LB,

I did not hear or read it anywhere else except on the blogs.

In fact, post match AW refused to criticise AA and said “we defend together as a team, and we attack together as a team”.

I was therefore surprised to hear he had allegedly made such an un-Wenger like comment later. I would like to hear when he made the “new” comment too. Someone?

  25. slimgingergooner says:

He’s not over the hill, but he refuses to adapt his game to suit his talents, and thats the problem.

Look at Paul Scholes, he plays 20 yards deeper than he did when he was 28 because he cant get around the pitch as well. Arshavin still tries to sprint past defenders but he hasnt got the legs anymore. He needs to be played as a second striker and he wont get that here.

    TIME TO GO.

As for the public criticism, Arsene has given AA lots of chances to bring his game up to scratch when other managers would have got rid a while ago. People critcise Wenger for putting too much faith in his players and not being ruthless enough, but when it does it, he gets slammed for dissing his player in public.

If i was putting my faith, and possibly my job, in someones hands and they let me down like AA has done, then i would feel within my rights to have a go.

  26. pat says:

ok Rasp – ta, good on him, you have to love the guy dont you?

I would like to see him back – him and lil’ Jack have a good rapport and would be a great midfield partnership.

They are the sort of characters that give me a lift and I am sure the squad / supporters as well…

ok here is another thought – if Frimpong was not on loan, and the sub was OX off Frimpong on in the man u game, how would the crowd reacted?

  27. fran says:

All the above is very true and I’ve called for andrey to be at least dropped if not sold on many occasions. but now that it looks like happening i must admit im kinda sad. i as im sure most gooners wished even will recently that our lil Russian would find form and become our new messiah but as we all now know it wasn’t to be. thanx for the good memories andrey and hood

  28. Red Arse says:

    Thanks Rasp.

But he did therefore say that he did not believe anyone going onto the field of play does not try.

He then said, in effect, that onlookers might believe that to be the case, but did not say it himself.

The second part is more damning, simply because he said it about a specific player.
I am really surprised by that, but he is under tremendous stress and perhaps mis-spoke, like we all do sometimes.

Congrats to you and Kelsey on your humongous Post reaction. :-)

  29. LB says:

    Hi Kelsey

Thanks for that but something is still fishy.

Does anyone know when Wenger is supposed to have said this, remember that Gary Neville accused Wenger of saying this immediately after the game, which is odd. So did Wenger allegedly say this before the game? That doesn’t make sense. I am still not convinced.

  30. Mark says:

This really, really is poor. The quotes you attribute to Arsene Wenger were made by Nigel Winterburn, so please get your facts right.

  31. Hi New Invincibles, that is very true – I was just focusing on Europe for a moment but we have had many fine players from the African Continent too. All those you mention and then there are Song and Gervinho as well.

  32. Tasos says:

    Rocky

You say these quotes came from Arsene?

Its rare that Arsene comes out and publicly condemns any Arsenal player.

Been searching the net and can only find one person who spoke these words, that little scumbag Gary Neville. Nothing from Arsene himself.

To resolve this confusion, maybe you could print the whole interview from sky. Thanks.

  33. David Kwalimwa says:

Nice piece on Arshavin. I like. Oops wait a minute, did u just say that Shevchenko was Russian?

    What can I say.

LB – can you explain to me, please? I am still baffled

  39. Rasp says:

Hi RA, there is a tangle of confused reporting that I do not have the stamina to try to unravel. I agree that AW looks under pressure and some of what I saw in his interview was a departure from his normal stance.

  40. evonne says:

Rocky – leaving to read your post till later, a bit like chocolate dessert

Kelsey – your comment about taking credit was hillarious :)

  41. Chas, that is very funny

    Top stuff Rockstar.
    Love the vid chas.
I loved the TW when we bought Arshavin, It was like going to the Cinema to watch a great movie. Me and my boy sitting there with our shirts on, popcorn, crisps, cola, getting excited by the rumour`s, “he`s actually going to spend some money for once on a quality player”. All the gooners outside the Stadium getting excited and like a great film the climax was left to the very end. “I am gooner “.

  46. chas says:

The following quote from Robin posted by GIE this morning (if Robin really said it, that is!), simply says what the majority of the crowd were thinking. Damage limitation, in my opinion

arshavin was world class when he arrived, his first few months he was our best player yet wenger kept him out wide on the left, its wengers fault andrey lacks motivation,,he obviously hates playing left winger,,,he could have been special for us but wenger fucked him up aswell

  51. pat says:

    @wonderman = agree with your 10:55 100%

“you have to earn the right to play”

Here is to us seeing players such as Ox show that he is going to earn that right and not be an “Arshavin* in the pan”

    - I do admit to feeling quite sad about Arshavin, he did seem to have that flash of brilliance, that ability to turn a game single handedly. Its gone though. I am worried that it seems to be disappearing from Walcott too.

    *or flash

  52. Chas, cannot tell. It only seems to be one or two words, like ‘waarom (why)’ or kom op! (come on!). It just looks to me he did not expect the substitution but his face – more than what he appears to be saying – seems to express a mixture of sllght annoyance and confusing. And how could he not be a bit annoyed and confused? Were’nt we all?

  53. slimgingergooner says:

  63. Chas, his facial expression is quite interesting to watch. It seems to reflect a battle between the heart and the brain. The former wants to remain loyal to Arsene but the latter is saying what the fuck are you doing that for? And that is probably why we can associate so well with it…

steve – yeah lets dump the most successful manager in our history – maybe chris kamara could be tempted to replace him.

On one hand Wenger has won arsenal titles, he has elevated us from a large mid table club to a small world class club and he built that higher moral ground of self sustainability that you and all us Arsenal fans enjoy.

On the other He hasn’t won anything in 6 years.

but maybe thats because he has been fighting a battle against the deepest pockets in the world, in the most corrupt sport (Sepp Blatter runs it) and still making a profit.
And while that profit won’t keep us warm like silverware at least its honest and some day soon it will lead to a haul of silver that will drain the very mines* of sterling of their ore.

Thanks kelsey, something to look forward to, I cant afford to loose anymore length, I was hoping the gravity effect was going to make It longer !. :(

  84. Kelsey  you are in fine form today!

  85. Arsedave says:

    RL

    Great article.

    Steve
Thick and thin and all that?

  86. kelsey says:

    GLIC,

I had the op 25 years ago and I don’t recommend it to anyone, just to have 3 inches taken off.

  87. talib says:

Hi gooners , let focus where we are at the end of this seasson.
    TOP7 yes i think .
why we has to end up top 7?
who is the culprit on window transfer? where is the money
we loan up player and sell but we short of player? who made this?
cash flow kronker keep just not spend shall we continue support the team? feel like cheating and the RVP believe will be sold end of seasson to madrid.

Wenger keep cash to kronker and they enjoy the shares so that no need to cover the replacement of player.
wenger has to out now so that we can find new manager has desire like chelsea, man city and man utd

  88. Kelsey, LB is taking the piss with you!

  89. kelsey says:

he always does, so what’s new :)

  90. Red Arse says:

    GLIC,

With a self proclaimed 2″ todger, the world is your oyster. Well if you can find any oyster that wants a 2″ todger ………………. obviously!

  91. kelsey says:

talib, with all due respects that is bolloxs.

  92. ‘You know that thing that happens when you give up before the end and then your team comes back to perform acts of valor and feel a queasy shame stealing over you like pond slick’

    From ‘Underworld’ by Don Delillo.

  93. kelsey says:

    OK:

Being serious. I will bet anyone that rvp STAYS.

  94. gooner lost in cornwall says:

F**K that, I may not be able to stop the ageing process, but I`m not going down without a fight in the “shrinking of my todger”. I`ll be gone a while, Mrs glic is going to chain me to a tree, the car and tow rope will do the rest, “easy on the gas pedal glicette baby” !

  95. Red Arse says:

    GLIC, :-) :-)

  96. RedA, as a former, female colleague, a Health & Safety executive, used to say to me: ‘It is not the size of the nail, but the force of the hammer that matters’. And she knew what she was talking about! :)

  97. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Bloody hell kelsey, you could have told me 25 years ago, I could have swapped an Arsenal ticket for “It” ………………………….. have you still got “it” ( or whats left of “it” ), I`ve got a Villa ticket.

  98. RockyLives says:

I’ve modified the start of the post (on the Dashboard) but I don’t know how to edit in “in situ” and am worried that if I press “publish” it will appear as a new post rather than an edited one.
If you can update it I’d be grateful.

  99. GLIC, you are hilarious mate. If you could only use some of your vast imagination to help you with your actual erotic endeavours you’d the happiest award winning man in Cornwall!

  100. Red Arse says:

    Hi TG, aka TA, :-)

Or in GLIC’s case “It is not the size of a snail”!! Ask Mrs GLIC. :-)

  101. RockyLives says:

    kelsey
why do you think RvP is going to stay?

  102. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Total,
It adds a new meaning to, “let the force be with you”

  103. TotalArsenal says:

    RA :) That sounds horrible!

  104. Red Arse says:

    TA,

I forgot to sympathize with you.

It must have been very disappointing for you to have her commiserate with you about the size of your snail. Perhaps that is why she is an ex-colleague, perhaps? :-)

  105. TotalArsenal says:

Let the force be upon you

  106. terry says:

Arshavins poor form is not his fault i blame it on wenger… he was alwayz played out of position and he never was able to be the winger wanger wnated him to be… he was a deadly weapon when played behind d striker.

  107. Red Arse says:

Publish and be damned, Rocky! :-)

  108. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Redders. :)
I cant even be as slow as a snail, 2 minutes is like world record Usain snail Bolt time !

  109. Becks says:

Nah, Arshavin is liked by Wenger, he will still be here next season, along with DJ, Wallycott, Rosicky, Diaby, Almunia, their his little project. He’s more likely to sell RVP and AOC to make some more money for the board.

  110. Red Arse says:

Yep. And I blame Wenger for my car not starting this morning. It had nothing to do with me mislaying my keys.

Wenger out, unless my car starts!

  111. TotalArsenal says:

:) Yep, RA, she was not only very sexy, and ‘free’, but she also had a high level of EQ. She wanted to make me feel better, but we both knew she had sussed me out!

  112. Rasp says:

Hi Rocky, the system tells me that you are still in the post so I can’t make any changes at the moment.

  113. Red Arse says:

Rocky, see what you have done? This must be a record for hit and run merchants!

  114. how are we AA’s ??
arshavins been played out of position n for some reason or another hes put on too much weight for his age, and where hed like to play in the pocket he is just not what we signed. but in his slim defence he has barely ever defended throughout his career in his natural position and yet wen we lost our CB’s and our confidence we begged for the team to defend collectively and it didnt suit his style or fitness levels..
Euro’s was a stellar performance on its own in his roller coaster career..but unfortunately its gone and he has to go..thanks for the memories..hes rumoured to be of interest to Nazio i mean Lazio and that to me sounds bout right, 5th plced team in a slow league with european ambitions, yeah thats fair to him.
Its sad but right now id take eduardo da silva ( i miss that boy) back n trade the pair..eduardo was never given this much time to get his confidence back…
but i wouldnt let him, AA23, go for less than 8mil..in a slow league like italy he will make magic happen once again, mark my words..ok thats my rant.. thnks for the post RL gr8 read, regardless of who said it (winterburn or neville) but it is and should be over already..c ya AA23.. podolski plEEEEEEase!!!!

  115. Red Arse says:

    TA, :-)

And not only that, but what are the odds on us both starting a sentence with the American colloquialism “Yep” and posting at the same time (12:42)?

That’s uncanny — great minds and all that! :-)

  116. kelsey says:

    RL,

to keep with the flow today, I feel it in my water :)

I honestly believe that he will get a substantial offer which he deserves just for these past 12 months alone., He has turned from a bit of a rebel in his youth and AW has guided him and I honestly believe he loves the club and the responsibility of the captaincy.
not every player is motivated by getting a ridiculous amount offered. He is a world class player and maybe he prefers to be a big fish in a good team rather than just another big transfer fee to RM or City as examples.,

  117. pat says:

On the upside at least he didn’t cost 50 mill.

  118. RockyLives says:

    Rasp
    I’m out.

    Kelsey :)
I think a wee pay rise for Robin would be in order.

  119. kelsey @12.27pm..
Agree with you there..things will get a little tougher before they get better but through many rumours and bulshit tripe in the media (especially in the summer)he will defy the odds and stay..
i would not be suprised to see (we’re not worthy) Dennis Bergkamp join our coaching ranks in some sort of way in the next 2-3 yrs..

  120. pat says:

arshavin that is – hey would you have torres, carroll or arshavin given 1) you had to choose one of them and play them in your team. 2) you had to pay the price they were paid i.e. torres $50M, carroll $35M, arshavin $13M (or was it 17mil)

  121. RockyLives says:

    Morning Redders
I wish Norfolk would come back on. I’m still trying to figure out who those alter egos are that he thinks I have.

  122. chas says:

    Rocky,
I haven’t a clue if this is helpful, but there used to be a blogger on Arsenal Insider (I think) called Fabregas the King and he always shortened his name to FTK.
When Fab left he changed it to RTK, Rocky the King.
I don’t know if Norfolk is confusing you and this other chap?

  123. PAT,
i would take torres in a heatbeat.. i would be a reborn PHENOMONOM…a partnership with RVP would win us the CL and bag many trophies with ramsey coming of age..he would be the link and key to rvp’s goals and dare i say it, they would talk less of messi ronaldo n co. torres’ style is beautifull, total arsenal style..but he is only getting older and unfortunately will rot away at chel$ki

  124. Rasp says:

Rocky, your changes have been corrupted in the draft in some way – can you email them to arsenalnuts?

  125. Red Arse says:

And who are you Chas??? :-)

Hi Rocky, it is obviously a case of mistaken identity.
No doubt LG who is now NG will explain all. :-)

  126. TotalArsenal says:

A case of serenyepity RA :)

  127. Arsenals.Greatest.Ever.Goals Part 1 http://dai.ly/zke9TI

you can also check it out on video Library

  128. i haven’t watch it yet, anyone feel AA23 would be featured

  129. fatgingergooner says:

Maybe this Arshavin business will make certain fans think twice before slating the manager for not paying top dollar for players. Arshavin was £17m, Ox was £12m, who would you rather have?

It was the same with Kozzer. People moaning because he wasn’t well known, now the 2nd best defender in the PL after Kompany.

Price tags don’t guarantee sod all in this day n age.

  130. Hi Rocky – are you still about? As you haven’t saved your changes they don’t appear for me when I look at the post in the dashboard. You need to edit the post from this page by using the edit option from the top left drop down menu – you need to be open in wordpress to see this menu, it’s under Arsenal Arsenal on the tab across your screen. Click ‘edit,’ make your changes and then press update and hey presto the magic will happen.

Can you do that? If not you could copy and paste your changes into a new post, call it ‘changes’ and I’ll do the rest for you.

    Let me know ……………. ;)

  131. Ramgun says:

Nobody was booing Arshavin. The crowd were booing Wenger. If Wenger had brought on Arshavin for the dreadful Walcott then there would have been no booing at all.

  132. slimgingergooner says:

    oh no!

ive turned fat again! need to adjust my iphone name.

  133. MickyDidIt89 says:

    FGG,
Re your point about price tags, Andy Carroll looks quite the bargain :-)
It’d interesting to look at transfers over the past few season’s measured in value-for-money.

  134. RockyLives says:

    Peaches
I’m trying to do as you suggest – but where is the “update” option??

  135. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

    Great article once again Rocky

Its nice to know that Arsene didnt publicly slate Arshavin. One of the many reasons Arsene is a great manager is that he does not bow to presure of the mob. Many want him to come out and give interviews were he will publicly slate the team or individuals to satisfy some fetish blood lust within themselves, but are left unsatisfied because Arsene is a man of principles and loyalty and wont indulge such nonsense.

As for AA, i can only assume that his continued stay at the club is a result of finances. i wouldnt be surprised if he has some sort of clause in his contract were he takes a large percentage of the selling fee, making him difficult to shift out. He comes over as a nice guy and If he makes a move abroad, i hope he can reproduce the form which he showed us in his first year or so.

  136. Rasp says:

The ‘update’ button is blue on the right hand side of the page

  137. Rasp says:

If you haven’t got it that means you don’t have access to do that and you should copy and paste it into a new post and peaches will sort it.

  138. jDump says:

Shevchenko is not Russian? he is ukrainian. Plus generalising a whole nation saying they never make it past 30 is a bit much. I feel so bad for andrey. Hes lovable but it just seems like hes not trying. If he put in the work he did against Leeds on a reular basis he would find his form in no time.

  139. RockyLives says:

    Rasp
    I don’t have that button.
I was going to change the top of the post to this:

This comment about Andrey Arshavin, made by Nigel Winterburn (apparently) to Sky Sports, speaks volumes about his future at Arsenal:

“It does look at times that he doesn’t want to be in this country and I think the way that the winning goal was set up for Manchester United – you expect a player in that position to have focus and make it hard for the winger.”

    (pic of Andrey)

The statement from someone closely connected with Arsenal that Andrey was (a) effectively to blame Arshavin for Manchester United’s winner and (b) is not happy in England is a clear pointer that the pocket Russki’s time at the Emirates is up.

    Then it’s the same thereafter…

  140. RockyLives says:

    Chas
Was FTK (RTK) witty, erudite, well informed and entertaining?

    Definitely not me then :)

  141. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rocky,
I did note your unashamedly gloaty “look at me with my children under steely blue skies and sunshine having a quick ski here in beautiful Canada” on Saturday. I took the comment as a personal nah-nah-nah-nah-nah

  142. RockyLives says:

    JD
    Fair point.
But when you’re my age you tend to slip back into thinking of Ukraine as part of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics which was in existence for most of my lifetime.

The Ukranians speak Russian (as well as Ukranian) drink vodka and share many cultural similarities.

It’s not scientific, but players from Russia-and-the-former-Soviet-Union do seem to burn out early when playing in western europe. They’re a sentimental bunch (there I go generalising again, but I do know a little about the subject) and this can make them more prone to finding life difficult away from home.

  143. RockyLives says:

    micky :)
merely keeping up my low level campaign of trying to entice you to a new life in the Colonies.

  144. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Rocky,
No need. Its job done as far as I’m concerned. Family need a working over though! I shifted the attack to “five years and see what happens” which is softening them up :-)

  145. Red Arse says:

    Slightly puzzled guys.

Andrei Sergeyevich Arshavin was born in Leningrad, now called St. Petersburg on 29 May 1981. He is the captain of Russia.

How does that make him Ukrainian, JDump?

  146. RockyLives says:

    Rasp/Peaches
I’ve changed it and put in as a Post…

  147. RockyLives says:

    Redders
    he’s referring to Shevchenko

  148. Red Arse says:

Stop pestering me with accurate details, Rocky. :-)

  149. Redders, he was talking about Shevchenko, who is ukrainian, as was Rebrov.

  150. SharkeySure says:

Arshavin has been in a pretty deep slump for quite a while…but I do think the stick he is getting is a little OTT.

Ok he didn’t defend the best for their winner, but its not like he stood and watched Valencia. T.

Throw in that Welbeck is unmarked 8 yds from goal…and you can see a collective failure

We had enough chances to win.

    Cracking article Rocky (auto paste)

  151. MickyDidIt89 says:

    RA,
I too find details sooooo passee

  152. gooner lost in cornwall says:

” Thats stretching it a bit too far “. mrs glic foot slipped on the gas pedal, now my todger has been rendered completely useless , but hey, I`ve heard skipping is a good exercise !

  153. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Chary,
Remember seeing those two for Kiev against us at Wembley. Now that was a bad idea.

  154. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Leave Redders alone, he`s been on the turp`s again !

  155. MickyDidIt89 says:

    GliC,
Surely the old fella would be ideal fishing line by now if you’ve been out there all this time with Mrs GliC burning rubber..

  156. Yeah, I saw Batistuta do the same to us at the same place, Mdi89.
On a tangent, anyone notice it weird that Arse.com are not running a MoTM article for the Manure game ?
I read that when voting finished Oxo had won 80% of the vote so why have they not announced him as being the winner of MotM on Arse.com?
Is it to avoid highlighting a contraversial aspect of the ManUre game ? Not good IMHO.

  157. Red Arse says:

Well if we are going to be picky ………..the Post included the comment that ………..–”do svidaniya” means goodbye, when clearly it means “not a good buy?”

If it was “goodbyeeee” it would have cyrillic spelling ………….. obviously, and should have been: до свидания — so there!!
Completely ruined my enjoyment of the Post!!!

That Rocky, eh — tsk, tsk – and even jDump never picked up on it.

Micky will tell you, that it is this attention to detail that is sooooooo important! [NOT] :-)

  158. chas says:

    Rocky,
That other blogger is a bit of a knob, virtually impossible to confuse him with you. That’s why I thought my suggestion may not have been that helpful/accurate.

  159. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Chary,
That’ll be two conspiracy theories in two days, what with LB’s advertising of Battersea Dogs Home to Korean TV yesterday.

  160. gunnern5 says:

I’ve created a spreadsheet showing the current status and the remaining 16 games for each of the top 7 teams.

It would appear that we have an easier run in than Chelsea who have 6 games against top 7 teams and 2 London derby’s, whereas we have 5 games against the top 7 and only 1 local derby.

Spurs face Liverpool , Newcastle, Arsenal and Man U in 4 consecutive games so they could drop a bunch of points.

If anybody is interested I would be happy to forward a copy of the spreadsheet.

  161. MickyDidIt89 says:

    g5,
Ah, the old easy run in number :-)

  162. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Micky, :)
I shall go out now and “fish” for some quality players and reel them in for Arsene………..Now where does that Hazard live ?

  163. Red Arse says:

I must say that I feel a certain sympathy for AA.

He does get overtaken or left behind when running, even by the guy doing the mowing at half time, but his little legs go like pistons and his cheeks look like you could roast chestnuts on them.

No, he does try, in my opinion.

The fact is his father died very young (40) from a heart abnormality and I sometimes fear that AA should be careful.

I know, I know – Arsenal keep an eye out for the physical well being of all our players, blah, blah — but doctors are not infallible – or else they would all be Popes!

  164. kelsey says:

I still think that, with AA to an extent , when Wenger has a player watched numerous times and then when a deal is done he changes what comes naturally to a player to fit into his system. Henry is mentioned time and time again that he started off as a winger. Bendtner and Vela and even Walcott have all at one time or another suggested they play more centrally. I am not saying any or all of them would be successful at that, but another is Rosicky, who was firing them in from all angles in the WC before we bought him, and now often plays much deeper in a midfield role

  165. RockyLives says:

    Oooh Gn5
Sounds like the basis for an interesting post!
    You got a straw, I’ll clutch it…

  166. MickyDidIt89 says:

    G5,
Actually that’s a thought. When is the small matter of our little local derby and will we have some fb’s and a Wilshere by then?

  167. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    gn5,
What about, the “not so top teams” we cant beat, are the points in the bag for us against them already ? :)

  168. RockyLives says:

  170. gooner lost in cornwall says:

  171. RockyLives says:

    Seriously.

  172. gunnern5 says:

    GLIC,

Your little thingamegig is upside down.

  173. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Rocky, let me introduce you to the rest of the Cuckoo Club, there`s Terry, cuckoo of the highest order, then ……………………

  174. Red Arse says:

    Rocky,

And let that be a lesson to you, my man!! :-)

  175. Red Arse says:

    GLIC,

Rocky is already an esteemed member of the club — you silly cuckoo!

  176. gooner lost in cornwall says:

It`s not gn5, that was me feeling sad, my memory is going , I cant remember the last win.
:) thats better, thats me looking at my tickets for the cup game !

  177. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Sorry, Grand Master Cuckoo

  178. Red Arse says:

    GN5,

I would like a copy of your spreadsheet, please. Has GLIC given it an imprimatur as his seal of approval? :-)

  179. Red Arse says:

Speaking of which, Oh GLIC, High Priest of the Grand Order of Cuckoos, where have MerryTerry and VCC your ardent acolytes gone?

Messing about in other birds nests no doubt. Hmmph.

  180. gooner lost in cornwall says:

I`ve been on the dog and bone to the planning department about a loophole for my Logcabin, I may not need any planning whatsoever, so the Cuckoo Club head office is taking a step closer. Mrs glic is not invited, even though she`s been to a few game`s, she`s far too sensible ! :)

I am sure you’re both very busy, but as this post is getting quite a lot of hits (the old provocative title trick!) it would be great if you could amend the opening….

  184. Red Arse says:

    Rocky,

    Snap! :-)

  185. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Redders,
Cant seem to get Terry away from his sticky telescope nowaday`s, I think he`s taken this “neighbourhood watch” thing beyond the call of duty. I think VCC lives at number 52!.

  186. RockyLives says:

  187. RockyLives says:

  188. RockyLives says:

  189. he is hopeless. we’ve all known that he hasn’t gone past his man/tracked for some time now but the really sad thing is i can’t even remember the last time he had anything like a clean connection with the ball when shooting. ever since that 4th went in at anfield he seems to have been wearing toblerone boxes for boots.

  190. gooner lost in cornwall says:

My logcabin dear Redders, I shall use my Woodpecker to make the Log`s !. :)

  191. RockyLives says:

I share your frustration Noel, but he did have one fine connection more recently – versus Barca at the Ems last season. Super goal.

  192. RL seriously unbeaten hmm

  193. RockyLives says:

I know super, cloud cuckoo land, but it’s just a feeling I have.

  194. Red Arse says:

    Rocky,

    Two in a row!! :-)

Do you know, I jokingly took Irish to task last night for writing dozens of S cunthorpes in one comment, and meant to write reprovingly “you can’t do that”, but made a typo and was thrown into prison or moderation whatever for one measly word.

Now that is sexist, and I was going to complain to Rasp, but he would probably have told to stop being a silly canute! :-)

  196. What is Arshavin natural position, and to me being played out of position shouldn’t stop the fact when you have a goal gaping in front you, you wouldn’t even hit the target

  197. Red Arse says:

Rocky, the beastly AA has thrown me (or my comments) into prison again.
I am off in high dudgeon until this unwarranted censorship ceases!! :-)

  198. hi do you’ll have a fantasy league and is it to late to join?

  199. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    super,
Fantasy league ?, My fantasy (among others ) is for Arsenal to win anything ! :)

  200. kelsey says:

superarsenaltv, fantasy league. We don’t need one on here with all these nutters ;)

  201. gooner lost in cornwall says:

  202. i still think Arshavin’s goal against Barca was a bit of luck, if it was any higher it would have hit the defender

  203. Red Arse says:

  204. RockyLives says:

    Redders
Off in high dudgeon because your comments have been thrown in the dungeon?
    Fair enough!

  205. Sorry Rocky, I misunderstood and thought you’d changed the opening of the post yourself :( I’ve sorted it now

  206. Just so you are all aware, that horrible little word that some of you love to use that begins with a c has now been banned.

Our dear friend goonermichael pushed the boundaries a little too far last week and I snapped and all variations including asterisks will now not appear unless used by Rasp. Unfair you may all cry but thats the rules.

goonermichael has himself taken to using the word ‘cad’ instead, I suggest you all do the same

    The Management

  207. kelsey says:

You seriously can’t do that by making Rasp the exception :)

  208. RockyLives says:

    Thanks Peaches :)

  209. kelsey says:

If that happened on LG they wouldn’t get any comments, sir or madam.

    I like it The management.

  210. RockyLives says:

I don’t want to be naughty, but I did notice that Scunthorpe slipped through the net…

  211. Sshhhhhh …… it’s not just Rasp that can use it, all of the administrators overide the rules ……. kelsey let Red Arses comment out of moderation but it was in there because of Scunthorpe

  212. ……… and it slipped through because it was you Rocky ……..

  213. Rasp says:

Just to let you all know, I have no intention of using said word, the exemption is simply to do with my status as an administrator.

I can’t stop, I’m flying off on holiday to Cancun tomorrow.

  214. kelsey says:

What’s wrong with Scunthorpe, not that i particularly want to go there.

  215. kelsey says:

Oh I just read it, sorry.

  216. Rasp says:

I probably shouldn’t go because I’m not well and won’t be able to see a paramedic until I get there.

  217. RockyLives says:

    Sorry you’re not well Rasp.

Hope you have a good time in Cancun.

Just don’t add a “t” on the end or you’ll be in big trouble :)

  218. Rasp says:

Have you missed both my puns Rocky or are you pulling my leg?

  219. kiezer says:

fans should stand together root out kronke/hill because they are the underlying problem at arsenal, we should back wenger but he needs to stop acting as the scapegoat for the board and be truthful with the arsenal fans.

  220. chas says:

“Just so you are all aware, that horrible little word that some of you love to use that begins with a c has now been banned.”

I read the above that I had been banned!

    Cabbages

    Northampton
    Terrapins

  221. gunnern5 says:

    Red Arse,

I’ve sent the spreadsheet to Rasp, in the hope that he will be able to forward it on to you.

  222. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Can I still use, Completely Useless Nonsensical Tottenham Scum. ?

  223. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    looks like I did ! :)

  224. You’re all such naughty incorrigible little boys ……… ;)

  225. RockyLives says:

    Haha
Missed ‘em both Rasp and thought you were serious :D

Merely myopic unthinking on my part.

Glad to hear your illness is an epic untruth.

  226. gooner lost in cornwall says:

Has anyone seen the rumoured away kit for next year, It looks like Man City`s one , but with horizontal stripe`s !.
May be the wizard chas could put it up, I see it via newsnow.

  227. VCC says:

  229. Rasp says:

    epic untruth  Rocky

  230. Red Arse says:

Umm, excuse me Peaches, but there was a naughty incorrigible female of the feminine persuasion who used more forbidden cads than anyone I have ever read in just one sentence!

She should be smote into moderation until she repenteth! :-)

  231. chas says:

I would never dream of using the c word on here, though I did call Mike Dean it a few times in the second half.

  232. Red Arse says:

I am sure the folk of Scun thorpe will be v. disappointed!

  233. RockyLives says:

    Chas
Very clever my friend, very clever…

Reminds of a sub editor I knew back in the ’80s who made it his mission, every week, to sneak the word “elk” into the Sunday national tabloid he worked on.

This went on for months, until someone grassed him up to the editor, who banned the use of the word “elk” thenceforth.

The following Sunday, no matter how hard you scoured the paper there was no “elk” to be found. The editor was happy, those of us who had been following the amusing game were disappointed…

…until one smart chap did the crossword and answered 8 Down…

  234. Red Arse says:

    Can this be true?

The growing army of Arsenal fans who argue that Arsene Wenger has served his time received heavyweight support from one of the club’s most high-profile supporters: Rwandan President Paul Kagame.

“I very much support Arsenal – but to be honest Wenger needs to coach another team now and Arsenal needs another coach,” Kagame wrote.

Any minute now, Queenie will be saying “as a long term supporter of Arsenal, One has decided to lop Wenger’s head orf!”

  235. Red Arse says:

    Thanks GN5. I appreciate it.

Hopefully the Rasper will do the business! :-)

  236. goonermichael says:

Thanks for all your messages this morning. I did read them. It’s very much appreciated. Sounds soppy but I feel I’ve made some friends on here.

  240. evonne says:

Micky – don’t be ridiculous, 5 years is an enternity! Now that Micky jr got to love football you are going to drag him across the world to play snowballs! I don’t want to hear any more about it, end of.

  241. evonne says:

GM – bless you xx You are very special and dear to this AAer

  242. VCC says:

GLiC.. your treading on thin ice matey, Peaches will have you in her pocket at the Villa game if your not careful.

  243. gooner lost in cornwall says:

  244. gooner lost in cornwall says:

e va va vonne, I looked at gm`s site yesterday, he is one seriously talented gooner !

  245. RockyLives says:

    The feeling’s mutual GM.

  246. Irishgunner says:

    Evening all,

First up, GM I’d like to add my condolences, hope you’re holding up okay.

2nd – I bought an AA23 jersey the minute he signed, I was that excited :( What happened our Russian?

  247. kelsey says:

    RL,

It’s strange how some of us pick up on things that the majority never notice.

I read two other blogs everyday and on one of them (ACLF) yogi always puts song titles into his sentences with each headline post. Not always obvious but quite clever.

  248. Irishgunner says:

    Hi Kelsey :)

Did you read the letter? I think it’s really  Bloody Manks

  249. TERRY MANCINI HAIR TRANSPLANT says:

Oh arry, were for art thou arry, condemned to suffer the indignity of the scrubs. The sins of men and hotspur are upon thee harry as ye ponder mans greed that led you to the place were men seldom repent.

Oh arry, no more the afections of Rosie47, instead thy greed is met by the brutal love that is cell 69 An unrequentied love of fear and loathing arry, were shower time is greeted with splendour by those who wait for the soap to fall.

Oh arry, the hotspur falls like the sunset of careers for he who enters this place, a domain were man knows his boss and keeps his head down. Catch anothers eye and know the dread of the forsaken baccy as currency were others will joust and battle for its erotic kiss.

Oh arry arry, ponder these words as slopping out nears and the hotspur falls.

  250. evonne says:

Rocky – I have just had the chocolate dessert, very nice indeed. Lower than JT’s morals made me laugh.
You are right, the Russians age or expire faster, no idea why that is.

I am sad that he most probably has ended his career at Arsenal at such a low note. My guess is that AW will push him somewhere very soon. After the disgusting booing he is no good to man or beast.

Da svidanya means ‘see you’, I think Praschtchaj is more appropriate

Thank you for yet another brilliant post

  251. evonne says:

GLiC – I know! He is an artist. I normally hate hairdressers and avoid them for as long as Peaches’ daughter allows me, but GM is someone very special.

He is well known and respected in hairdressing circles (and amongst divorce solicitors). I met him a few weeks ago and he is nicest, humble, polite man you can imagine. And he speaks Japanese. He didn’t call anyone a cad, not even once. Lovely guy.

  252. evonne says:

why is my comment awaiting moderation?? i had to change a word, now it is back on.

  253. Big Raddy says:

kelsey. Someone on here uses a song title on all of his posts, or haven’t you noticed? :-)

  254. kelsey says:

Raddy.. have i told you lately that i love you ;)

  255. Big Raddy says:

Rocky. Another fine post. Should AA stay? Not if he wants to Captain Russia in the next WC because he will be at best 3rd choice in his position next season and have little playing time.

It is a sadness because like many others I like the fellow, he is a charming man. Not been great for AFC but his goal and assist record compares with anyone apart from RvP.

  256. Big Raddy says:

kelsey. Everybody’s trying to be my Baby …..

  257. Irishgunner says:

Guys – you’ll be glad if you click on my earlier link

  258. kelsey says:

as opposed to have your baby :)

  259. Big Raddy says:

GM. I hope today went well.

My Mother’s funeral is on Friday in Brighton. All is planned but I am not sure whether to make an address – she would have hated it but as oldest manchild I feel it is my duty. I guess I will decide on the day. (n.b. Not looking for advice !!!)

  260. Big Raddy says:

Irish. Always thought Mancs were wankers

  261. goonermichael says:

    Thanks raddy
it went very well. Very sad but nice all the same. I couldn’t have said anything as I was a bit distressed. I bet it was the first time they’d had “Woolly Bully” (Mum’s favourite song) played at a funeral there before.

I hope yours goes as well as it can.

  262. evonne says:

Raddy – I organised my ex-ex-mother-in-law’s funeral 5 years ago. I was very glad I gave her a good send off, but the best thing was a CD I compiled with songs that she liked. There was no morbid funeral music and I was pleased that the mood was not depressing. We celebrated in a way her life.

I am sure you will do the right thing, you are a wise and kind man

  263. Irishgunner says:

BR – Condolences to you and yours

And now we know they are wankers

  264. evonne says:

    GM – snap :)

  265. Big Raddy says:

My Mum has chosen Jerusalem. How bloody tacky :-(

Woolly Bully is a top choice.

  266. goonermichael says:

    She had
It must be love by Labi Sifre
Everything I own by Ken Boothe
Where do you go to my lovely? by Peter Sarsdedt
and Ave maria by mario Lanza

  267. Big Raddy says:

When someone very close to me died we had some fantastic music. A pianist played I wish I knew how it feels to be Free (the theme music to Film Night) and then a famous friend sang Something inside so Strong by Labi Siffre. Not a dry eye in the house.

The exit song was Reach Out I’ll be There by The Four Tops.

Somehow music resonates much more than words with me.

  268. Big Raddy says:

GM. Lovely. Especially the Mario Lanza

  269. Irishgunner says:

Two of my cousins died young and for both their funerals they used Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” – its like a funeral song to me now, still awesome though.

  270. VCC says:

    GM lovely choice of music.
    God Bless

  271. Big Raddy says:

Anyway. I only popped in to wish GM well.

It has been a long, hard day and I am hopeful of a long, hard night ;-)

    Night All

  272. evonne says:

    Night Raddy, you devil!

  273. goonermichael says:

    Night Raddy. Thanks.

  274. Gooner In Exile says:

Rocky a fine post, only just had chance to comment.

I feel sad that AA23 has not refound his form. I wish he would.

Our little discussion about the c word earlier reminded me of one of Humphrey Lyttletons ISIHAC intro’s. He was talking about Nottingham and said something along the lines of :

“Nottingham was a Norse town and as such was named Snottingham. City leaders decided to drop the S and become plain old Nottingham. Residents of Scunthorpe are still celebrating that their leaders did not adopt the same policy”

  275. critic says:

He was never given his favorite position of AM behind the striker.

  276. gooner lost in cornwall says:

    Irish,
My Brother wanted “My Way” played at his funeral. He was a well known receiver of “dodgy” goods in the EastEnd and It`s ironic that he fell of the back of a lorry when he died ( he would have laughed at that ). His funeral was like a set off a Guy Ritchie movie, Squashed nosed heavies with dark glasses in abundance. I miss him so much. Too many tales to incriminate myself, but some of the most adventurous of my earlier life .

  277. Irishgunner says:

GLIC – I say you could tell a tale or two alright

  278. If anyone was wondering what was on van Persie’s shirt on Sunday it was a birthday message for his grandpa who is celebrating his 91st birthday. There are some great pics on twitter.

  279. Hi Irish – did you have any inspiration for a post? We need some for this week ………….

  280. evonne says:

I am going to be buried in my redcurrant shirt

  281. Irishgunner says:

Peaches – I’m putting a post into drafts now. It wasn’t my mysterious music one of last week but just something that can be used whenever needed.

  282. evonne – do you want to see the van Persie pics?

  283. OK, thanks for that Irish :)

But ya know, he’s with Arsenal for the easy money

  286. chas says:

Grandpa van Persie’s looking good for 91!

  287. chas – maybe gets vertigo :) nice to see can though

You have to admire the way he legged it back to scoop that ball off the line on Sunday though – it was a great moment

  288. GoonerDave says:

Such a pity Arshavin hasnt been at his best for a year or so now. His goals/assists stats for last season were pretty good though, I just wish he could find that spark again. Sadly, its probably gone for good.
I just dont like the fact that we seem to have become so bloodthirsty in a search for the scapegoat. Welbeck scored a very easy goal, and Song et al did nothing either.
As fans, we are all very restless now. Top 4 is slipping away, and worse still we are playing quite poorly. If a big signing was ever needed, its needed now. The fans and the squad would get a massive lift from it.
Optimistic I know, but if Rosicky is on the way out, surely we must be planning something? I actually feel we are going to sign a midfielder in the coming days. Heres hoping!
Decent article, and interesting comments as always!

  289. Jamie says:

I see James Lawton(Telegraph), Alan Smith and the Rwandan president have all slammed Wenger.

    That is an odd trio.

Do we want to beat Villa or not? What does everyone think?

  290. RockyLives says:

I thought BFG was our MoTM on Sunday (along with Kozzer). He even played well throughout the first half, when Utd were able to attack unhindered down our flanks.

  291. gunnern5 says:

One of my Dad’s (Harry) favourite tunes was “We’ll meet again” .

He was also a self taught pianist with a very distinctive style, we found a tape recording of him playing the tune and decided to make it the last tune played at his funeral. When the recording started the reaction in the church was amazing, his eldest sister (94) gasped – “Oh that’s my Arry” – and turned around half expecting to see him, brings back very fond memories of a very sad day……

  292. Irishgunner says:

Peaches – post is in drafts, I might have waffled a bit but I feel better for saying it

  293. Gooner In Exile says:

I have my ticket for Sunday :)

Now admittedly I should’ve checked before booking it as it appears trains from Norwich are buggered on Sunday so I have choice of replacement bus service….no fun, or epic train journey. Worse still the train/bus ticket is going to be more expensive than normal.

Lucky Peaches owes me so many Peronis :D

I have gone for North Bank Upper Corner Block 98 Row 19…..anyone close?

  294. neamman says:

We need a massive signing.. not because our players are bad.. but to make a statement that we will compete. Doesnt matter if the player does zip in this season.. but everyone will know next season we plan to be number one!!!

  295. Irishgunner says:

    http://twitpic.com/8bad3r

Daily Mail reporting Real Madrid after AW …. again! Aren’t they always.

  296. GM & B Radd
im sorry to read about your loss and offer my well wishes for you both in these hard times..

  297. Jose will be looking for a new club then in the summer?

  298. that design of our reported away jersey in the pic is Ugggly.. actually its not that bad in design as it is in colour reminds me so much of manUre with the black hoops..the burgundy/maroon is nice, maybe with navy blue or even light grey hoops for a change with our sponsor printed in gold….it looks like a mix between 2 previous away jerseys…still cant distract from the fact that it does look similar to the manUre away kit..
nike has brandished football completely..similar in their marketing and design strategies involved in the world of tennis where kit designs are the same for all players with only the colours varying..
    Damned Commercialisation!!!

  299. Jamie says:

Stuart Robson has just been on the radio having a pop at Wenger.

That’s out of order, he does Arsenal.com. Surely that is bang out of order.

  300. Josh says:

What an absolute joke of a post. You should possibly spend your time writing posts that actually have some meaning rather than trying to make a joke every 2 lines!! Sad and pathetic is how I can sum this up!! I think everybody should lay off of Andrey. Would you not be totally pissed of with the fact that you are sitting on the bench and that useless twat Theo is starting every game?! Even when you do come on the pitch, the manager plays you out of position!!! Most of you have obviously never played football at a decent level!! With some comments, it doesn’t even look like you’ve graced a Sunday League pitch!!!

  301. Stuart Robson, very poor effort !!

  302. Gooner In Exile says:

Josh wind your neck in mate. One of the most pertinent tactical commenters on this blog is a qualified coach.

Most of us were hoping for AA23 to succeed to bring himself out of the slump, but tell me, do you really believe he is trying hard enough to do it. If a player wants to prove a point they do what TR7 and Ox did on Sunday and work bloody hard for the ball and their teammates, they don’t slouch around whining about not playing in his ideal position, which we simply don’t use anyway. Could we carry Arshavin in the hole? No we can’t. As that person in the hole has to work harder than any other of the three centre midfielders when we are not in possession.

This position that AA23 wants to play. Where exactly is it, you say Theo getting in ahead of him is pissing him off well surely that’s not his position either out wide right is it.

Finally how about you take your own advice and lay off Theo?

Oh and do tell what heady heights you have reached in the coaching and playing arenas, we will be super impressed I’m sure…. but then again maybe not, because any level of football from Hackney Marshes to the World Cup the first thing any coach will tell you is when you haven’t got the ball you can’t have passengers in the team. Arshavin is a passenger. So to outweigh that he has to be perfect when we have got the ball, he isn’t and hasnt been for a long time.

Anyway nice first comment coming on and telling us we’re all idiots, do come back and regale us some more.

  303. allezkev says:

I am only an occassional contributor to this fine blog, but may i at this late hour, add my condolences to all everyone else who has sympathised with the sad losses suffered by Michael and Raddy.

  304. greg onyeka says:

Yeah from me to arshavin is. do svidaniya. He has done is part for arsenal and is will always be remember if not for anything else for the four goals against leverpool that is history to me .

  309. Gooner In Exile says:

Btw people were discussing our Fantasy Football League.

My position is shown as 20th but is a lie as having a look through the top 10 teams I think 8 people should be disqualified.

    The crime…..Picking a Spud!

So in actual fact I’m 12th. But if there is anyone from 11-19 who has a spud they too get disqualified.

  310. evonne says:

Raddy – so, are you tired this morning?

  311. evonne says:

  313. Sandeep Yadav says:

Try to sell them at ny amount is a nice idea indeed ..http://sandyyadav.com/

  314. evonne says:

Josh – it is very sad that your first comment on AA is so negative and derogatory. Had you bothered to read any of the previous post, you would notice several positive and expectant articles about Arshavin. He has disappointed and he is going. This in not mine or the author’s decision.

Do you have to be a professional footballer, like yourself, to have an opinion? I didn’t know that. Yep, never played football in my life, yet I could not live without Arsenal. Sorry if that upsets you.

Re humour in the post – we need it badly after 3 consecutive defeats. It’s not toilet humour and might not be appreciated by some, but it made me laugh, alot. Cannot wait for another :)

  315. kelsey says:

Every year for the past 4/5 seasons we are written of but now nearly every ex arsenal pundit is saying the same thing about our defiences except Perry Groves. i was surprised to read Alan Smith joining the band wagonwho IMO has always been fair and moderate in his comments.

None of us now what the real strategy is be it short term or long term, but it must be unsettling to the manager and players alike.

My main bone of contention is that the chairman and manager continuosely contradict themselves, or maybe the media word it in such a way.

It would be interesting to somehow get a survey of the average age of the regular home supporter and how long they have actually been supporting the club.I use the word supporter loosely.

I like many others can see this transition period lasting perhaps longer than a solitary season and have accepted the fact that with a few key players missing with no definite return date confirmed that we most probably will still struggle this season to achieve top 4.

We have been spoilt in the early and middle years of Wenger’s tenure but now in less than a year from fighting on all 4 fronts we are by some thinking we will finish around mid table, the manager will go and so will a few of our top players.
Some of that is possible but a policy of youth and perhaps getting rid of some of the more experienced players plus the mega money at Chelsea and City has made it nearly impossible to compete for many players that have been targeted.
We held on but the final blow though inevitable was losing a motivatedFabregas who cannot be replaced out of thin air.

At the end of the day one either believes that Wenger’s hands are tied or he just will not spend. Time will tell.

  316. evonne,
very impressive, you go girl..i always had n image of you losing your mind behind a sofa :-p but youve proved to be a diplomat with great leadership qualities..in true gooner form youve come through when it counts….

  317. evonne says:

RobinUR – no, no, no, you got it all wrong, I am the queen of the cuckoo club, and proud of it :) Only sometimes the claws come out and I scratch tables, not a pretty sight

  318. evonne says:

Kelsey – bravo! Very wise words

  319. Gooner In Exile says:

    Evonne are you going?

Think it’s going to be quite a turnout at the Tavern.

Have sorted my trains so I will arrive at Finabury Park around 2pm all going well :)

  320. evonne says:

GiE – no, I am not going, but you are parking here no?

  321. Red Arse says:

    Morning Evonne,

Are you showing off about your large parking area?

GIE’s train might take up your neighbour’s as well!! :-)

  322. evonne says:

RA – he he he, trust you to appreciate my hospitality. Driveway is tiny, but I live in a close where parking is safe and free, all right?!

Balotteli’s agent threatens to take him from ‘this country’ if bullying doesn’t stop :) FFS

  323. Gooner In Exile says:

Evonne I am taking the train so I can make sure my vocal chords are adequately hydrated and liberated :)

  324. evonne says:

Good, the Club needs your voice!

RA – for your information – when you see the crowd of 50k+ Gunners going to a home game, notice one guy taller than others and shouting louder than others, starting chants, throwing abuse at Scum, the soul of the party – that’s out GiE. And I am not kidding, the man is larger than life

  325. bonaroca says:

I fully agree with all the comments made on Arshaven, honestly I think he is just a part player for Arsenal so he should be transferred . There is no excuse for Mr.Wenger not to enter the market for a defender and
an experienced forward to pair up with Van Persie.

Also order Song not to fiddle in midfield with the ball to show us how good he is.

I have been an Arsenal Supporter since 1946 when Arsenal were passing through a bad period

    GIE,
Picking a spud in the fantasy is allowed as it’s guaranteed to curse them.
It’s picking Arsenal players that immediately disqualifies you as they are then bound to get injured. Hence our appalling injury record this season.

  327. chas says:

Alan Smith is a brummie wanker.

  328. Saburi jonathan says:

I want arsene wenger to sell andrew arshavin.

  329. chas says:

    So do I.

  330. Morning all

Lots of new posts have appeared in drafts – thank you – so I’m just sorting which one to use today. Back in a while.

For what it’s worth, I think AA should be put out of his misery and moved on. He was never given the chance to play in his best position and although he loved having Fab and Na$ around him he looks a really lost soul now :(

  331. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Morning all,
I am sure that in the right position, in the right team, in the right league, our little Russki could recapture his mojo. I hope so, I like the bloke.

  332. Red Arse says:

    Evonne @ 8:25.

Being only a tiny, tiny little thing no bigger than a thumb, and also being very, very, shy and extremely quiet and reticent to stick out in a crowd, I am in awe of the Goliath that is GIE. :-)

  333. Gooner In Exile says:

  334. kelsey says:

    Micky,
    what about Scunthorpe :)

  335. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Steady on now Kelsey :-)
    Isn’t that where Botham played?

  336. kelsey – stop abusing your power!!!!!!!

  337. GiE may have a point about the players in ones Fantasy Football team. Sadly, I have Sagna and Theo and we know how their seasons have gone thus far.

I do have a spud too

  338. Big Raddy says:

    Evonne. No. Just Grumpy :-(

Shame Josh didn’t have the nuts to come back on and explain himself. Perhaps he could have expanded his view.

But then it is most likely his knowledge and footballing experience comes from hours in his bedroom playing Championship Manager with the lights off in case his parents come upstairs and ground him.

  339. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Evonne,
Just saw your comment from yesterday about my five year plan :-)
By the way, how are those not-nearly-as-clever-as-cats animals of yours?

  340. chas says:

    Peaches,
It’s ok to have Modric, with 3 goals and two assists last season it’s a no-brainer.

    Evonne,
    I bet dogs can’t do this…

  341. MickyDidIt89 says:

    Chas,
    You’re clearly a cat man :-)

  342. Big Raddy says:

Dogs don’t want to. They do smart stuff like help bring sheep home and save peoples lives in the mountains and water or help blind people.

When did you last see a Seeing Eye Cat?

  343. Big Raddy says:

And Micky – before you come in with all that “cats are independent and free-spirited” crap.

Why does it live in your house?

  344. Big Raddy says:

    Dogs are Tony Adams

    Cats are Samir Nasri

  345. MickyDidIt89 says:

    BR,
Fact. Dogs have four words. Cats have four hundred.
Only last night I overheard one of ours comment: “I am convinced the ’79 is superior to the ’76″. Ok, a wine snob, but can you imagine a dog even thinking that?

  352. the renowned Marcel Proust pointed out that the trdue voyage of discovery is not
consisted of searching for new landscapes, but rather in having new eyes.

I appreciate you for opening mine.
