I spend much time discussing football with fans of other teams. Inevitably we play the “but he would never play in our team “game, and this could be the first of “How many Arsenal players would get in ……… first team”?
Let us look at the current leaders of the PL, Man Utd, taking what I believe to be Mr Wenger’s first choice 11 v Aaron’s view of the SAF’s first choice.
Note Well. This team is set-up in Arsenal’s formation , not the Man Utd 4-4-2 !
Van de Saar v Szczesny.
Not as obvious as one might think. Van de Saar has huge experience and has been a superb keeper. Had AW signed him 5 years ago we could well well won a title or two, but at 40 y.o. his powers are fading and retirement beckons. Whereas our new GK is but a slip of a lad and has a glittering future ahead – he dominates the area, is a fine shot-stopper and is learning quickly. Experience v Youth? It has to be the Pole.
Sagna v Rafael.
Rafael looks major find. Comfortable on the ball, can cross, likes to attack, and can tackle but he has already shown a questionable temperament and has clearly studied tapes of Dani Alves’s cheating techniques. Sagna is quite simply the best right back in the PL. I would like to see his crossing improve but in every other area he is superb.
Centre Backs.
Man Utd are truly blessed in this area. Ferdinand and Vidic combine footballing skills and strength. They are both on-field leaders and the rock around which MU function. Arsenal’s first choice CB pairing is unclear, who are they? TV/JD? TV/Kos? Kos/JD? The JD/Kos pairing seems stable and they combine well but neither is at the level of either of MU’s CB’s
Clichy v Evra.
I love Gael, I detest Evra, but my feelings are not based around their footballing ability. Sadly, Evra is a fine footballer, a winner and very consistent. Gael, as we all know, has lapses, I think he is a better attacking force than Evra but Evra is more solid. I am afraid Evra gets the shirt.
Song v Carrick
No contest here. When Carrick was at West Ham he looked as though he could develop into the new Bryan Robson – it didn’t happen, whether through lack of ability or injury, we will never know. Either way, he hasn’t the control or vision of Song who at the tender age of 23 is already one of the most influential players in the PL.
Fletcher v Wilshere.
Jack’s progress is nothing short of astonishing. At the age of 19 to be the central figure in the England team indicates a truly great player in the making, but Fletcher is the key player in a dull yet effective MU midfield. A terrier and a man who doesn’t accept losing – just the type of player we are lacking at Arsenal. So it is with heavy heart that I take Fletcher, because I believe that with him in the team we would already have won the PL, though I fully accept this is a controversial decision!
Nani v Theo
Another tough one. Nani has all the tricks, has pace and a fine shot. He also has a very questionable attitude and dreadful hair. Theo has better hair, more pace, less attitude and could be a future Arsenal great. However Nani has 9 goals and 16 assists and is the most effective player in the PL this season, whereas despite having his best season to date Theo has 7 goals, 6 assists. Shame on me but it has to be Nani
Rooney v Fabregas
This is difficult because they do not play the same roles as MU normally set up as 4-4-2-. If one assumes that Rooney is MU’s playmaker then we have to pit him against our own playmaker, I could duck the issue and say it depends upon the opposition or shift Rooney out left to be compared with Nasri, but a direct comparison it has to be. Let’s look at this season’s stats – Cesc: 31 apps, 9 goals. 13 assists. Rooney: 29 apps, 9 gls, and 11 assists (?). On these stats Cesc is more slightly effective though both are the talisman of their sides. When either of them plays at the top of their form, their teams win. I love Cesc and this is an Arsenal site so Cesc gets it.
RvP v Hernandez/ Berbs.
I asked my MU mad friend Aaron who would be SAF’s first 11, and he chose Hernandez ahead of Berbatov. I would pick RvP ahead of either of them. Simply put, our Dutch striker is World Class, a player who can score both the spectacular and elementary goals.
Nasri v Valencia
Valencia is a fine player and I expect him to have a major impact on the PL next season, but Nasri is at another level. That Samir became France’s new National Captain last weekend is evidence of his rising stature and reliability. A fine player and with Valencia only just returning from injury, the obvious choice.
So a team of:
Quite how this team would function would be the managers concern though he would have a fantastic bench should the team not perform.
Clearly MU’s defensive steel added to Arsenal’s greater ball control would be a frightening prospect for any opposition and I would expect this side to win the PL, but they would be unlikely to go through a season unbeaten – only a truly great side could do that ….
Finally, today is the 10th anniversary of Rocky’s untimely death. We all loved Rocky, he was a Gooner through and through, a hero to all who watched his development through the youth teams and into the wonderful player he became. My favourite memory of him was his goal at the Lane in the League Cup Semi-Final – one of the most exciting moments of my life. Gone but never forgotten.

This article lost all credibility when you chose Fletcher over Wilshere! Laughable
I love stuff like this, excellent post Raddy!
I would go for the following:
Szczesny
Sagna, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra
Song, Wilshere
Nasri, Fabregas, Rooney
Hernandez
Gutting to pass over van Persie, but good as he is, he lacks a clinical, killer instinct. Hernandez has taht in spades and would gorge on all the chances a midfield with Wilshere, Nasri, Fabregas and Rooney.
Like you I hate Evra but respect his ability. That said, he’s put in some very ordinary shifts in his time too and I see a resurgent Clichy and him as being evenly matched. But right now I’d accept that Evra shades it.
I’d match up Carrick with Wilshere and Fletcher with Song, but regardless of that, I’d favour our two over United’s. Wilshere has so much to offer any side, and already sits above more limited players like Fletcher and Carrick.
Rooney looks great on the left wing, I’d be delighted to have him over there, attacking the penalty area.
And in goal, many United fans will say we’re deluded, but I agree, Szczesny is the one. Van der Sar is a great keeper, and like many I wanted us to grab him from Fulham, but he makes his share of mistakes too and I feel the younger man is already slightly ahead of him.
Nani is a tough one to leave out (despite being an unpleasant little oik) but I do feel Nasri has more to offer, even though Nani is better in the traditional winger role.
David Rocastle, we all loved him. I remember seeing him score an absolute scorcher against Liverpool in the League Cup, no backlift but the ball flew into the corner of the goal. The day Graham sold Rocky was the day I realised there was something very wrong in the way our club was being managed. Rocky was a true Gooner. RIP.
It doesnt matter how old Van Der Sar, no-one would pick the pole over the dutch master. Its very simple what the team would be, every single one United but I do believe Cesc Fabregas could get into our squad, he’s a pretty good player as is Van Persie. Van Der Sar, Rafael-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra, Valencia-Fletcher-Fabregas-Nani, Berbatov/Hernandez-Rooney/Van Persie – I would play Cesc ahead of Carrick but to be honest only Fabregas and Van Persie would get into our squad.
VDS
Sagna Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Nani Fabregas Fletcher Nasri
Rooney van Persie
Morning Jules,
The article can’t have lost credibility because it is Raddy’s opinion, you clearly disagree which is fine. I was surprised he chose Fletcher over Jack. I understand his reasoning, and the 2 times manu have beaten us this season have mainly been down to outmuscling us in midfield so maybe his argument has merit (but I’d have to go for Jack too)
what a stupid article…just because ur polish keeper is young that doesnt mean he can replce class….van der saar at the age of 40 is the best gk in the league rite nw…is ur team the future 11 or the current 11??
your defense is correct but you r putting song on right wing?? nani should be there anyday…unless you are playing 4-3-3 ur mid should be fabregas song and fletcher which is correct but nani on right van persie in between and rooney on left..
so it should be:
van der saar
sagna vidic ferdinand evra
fletcher song
fabregas
nani van persie rooney
and if its 4-4-2 then:
van der saar
sagna ferdinand vidic evra
nani fletcher fabregas nasri
van persie rooney
It doesnt matter how old Van Der Sar, no-one would pick the pole over the dutch master. Its very simple what the team would be, every single one United but I do believe Cesc Fabregas could get into our squad, he’s a pretty good player as is Van Persie. Van Der Sar, Rafael-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra, Valencia-Fletcher-Fabregas-Nani, Berbatov/Hernandez-Rooney/Van Persie – I would play Cesc ahead of Carrick but to be honest only Fabregas and Van Persie would get into our squad. Quite an interesting piece.
alright, anyone who drops RVP has definately lost me. He is the best. I cant believe someone would pick that kid over VP. EWWWWWW.
Oh no. I forgot this would bring a bunch of people calling you stupid on your own blog. Yur own ARSENAL blog.
Hiya Raddy – hate Evra too! Agree with most, but you seem to left out Koscielny and Vermalean, I think they are excellent defenders. Also, Wilshere is must for my team.
I’ll say a little prayer for Rocky’s family
DJ,
You are a guest on here. Manu supporters are welcome to join the debate but we do not appreciate phrases like ‘this is a stupid article’ – learn some manners or blog elsewhere.
Jules appears to have missed out on the manners lessons at school, still he will have time when he gets to the 3rd year
This article is to promote discussion.
RR/ FIG. As I said MU play a different formation to us and I have chosen the MU players to fit into OUR formation, not a 4-4-2, otherwise it would be obvious tp play both Fabregas and Rooney.
Haha, Webb was playing for them even in those days.
Just look at those Gooners behind the goal.
Evonne, good as Koscielny and Vermalean are, the CB pairing at United is simply the best right now. I’d go as far as to say it is THE reason United are still competitive, having become more ordinary over the past couple of years in terms of creative play. Vidic and Ferdinand are indivudally better than our CBs and together are even better.
To be honest actually, my squad would be so. Van Der Sar, Rafael-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra, Valencia-Fletcher-Fabregas-Nani, Hernandez- Berbatov/Rooney/Van Persie. Javier ‘Chicharito’ Hernandez is the guaranteed front man as he is that good, a ManUtd superstar and future legend, Mexico’s biggest superstar and the future best player in the world. The only Arsenal players I have is Fabregas and Van Persie, you cant let Barcelona buy Cesc or your screwed.
FIG. I am stunned that you consider Rafael a better RB than Sagna. The others are open to debate, but Sagna is a much better player.
Plus we are not talking potential here, we are discussing the team that would run out on Saturday – so despite his undoubted potential, Hernandez is not yet at the level of RvP. (IMO)
In fact, when I wrote the article, I was very much in two minds as to whether t drop Fletcher for JW, it is only that the team needs bite that I included him, because IMO Wilshere is a far better footballer.
Morning all, interesting poser there Radders and as ever thanks for your input – amongst the clamour for Vidic to be in a combined XI I wonder how effective he would be if he played for us.
Would he get away with his brand of all in wrestling with opposition forwards if he wore the red and white of Arsenal as opposed to that of the Salford Kickers?
We all saw how many times Kozzer was given soft reds and yellows for offences that are not even deemed fouls for either Vidic or the turtle faced drug cheat.
Well as we can see Manunited fans have some self respect and are not gonna come on here and and start adding arsenal players to their team, i suggest we do the same. There is not one man u player i would prefer. thats the truth.
To be honest i dont care one little bit about manu right now. we are trying to win the title. This might have been a better discussion at the end of the season.
chary
“Turtle faced Drug Cheat”. Superb as ever Chary!
Goonerwife. It’s the Interlull ….. sorry
Chary. Happy day yesterday – the atmosphere in the ground was amazing, and the best team won.
You mean at Mohali Radders ?
I have a smile on my face today, unusual for one with doomer tendencies, similar to one you’d have after a semi final win against the spuds/mancs/chavs to the extent that I won’t really be bothered about the result of the final on saturday.
In any case I’ll be with my fellow AA’ers getting pissed at the Tavern.
Good times.
Anyone who choose that skul boy hernandez ahead of rvp need serious mental help.or maybe he is jus tryn 2 be fun.the truth is arsenal players ar technichally better than united’s.wilshire is streets ahead fletcher.only c.bs and keeper wil get into our team and maybe rooney.the rest wil war the bench along with bendtner, denilso and co.
yeah, many fans said that we will be screwed after Henry departure, but hey ho, we went to have 28 games unbeaten in all competitions, and only have been once on the losing sides in the league before a thug from birmingham ended Eduardo career at Arsenal.
1- How can you possibly compare VDS with Szezny and somehow try to make choosing the pole logical. Heck, Kuszcak is better than your number 1! No comparison whatsoever.
2- Why the hell do you compare Song to Carrick and not Scholes? Only reason I can think of is because Song would edge Carrick, not Scholes. Scholes in, Song out.
3- Why do you compare Valencia, and not Giggs, to Nasri. In any case, Nasri gets the place this season, but I don’t seem to find it logical to choose Valencia who played a small number of games to compare him to Nasri.
4- Rooney/Fabregas comparison.. complete BS!
5- Why don’t you compare Rooney to Van Persie? Seems more logical my friend, and then compare stupid Chamack to Bendtner to Chicharito. Both United players will get the better of this one.
My team:
VDS
Sagna, Rio, Vidic, Evra
Nani, Scholes, Fabregas, Nasri
Rooney
Chicharito
Thats a good point, why wasnt Giggs/Scholes included. its not difficult. Van Der Sar, Rafael-Vidic-Ferdinand-Evra, Valencia-Fletcher/Fabregas-Scholes-Giggs/Nani, Hernandez-Berbatov/Rooney/Van Persie.
TB9
Firstly, if you read the article you will note that the MU sude was chosen by a MU fan, not me, as I too would have chosen Scholes and Giggs but as they are only bit players this season, Aaron stands by his selection.
Secondly, You are entitled to your opinion but like mine it is biased
Man Utd fan here. To be honest it’s pretty pointless comparing United’s and Arsenal’s teams. United will usually play a 442 compared to your 451/433 whatever you want to call it. United have had, and always will have as long as Fergie stays, flying out and out wingers. Wenger doesn’t seem to have any (maybe Walcott) but he prefers little technical players like Nasri and Arshavin to play on his wings. For this reason comparing Nani/Valencia/Giggs/Park to Nasri/Arshavin is pointless as they have different roles to fulfill. Sure Nasri is probably more skilful than Valencia but would we want him at United? No. He doesn’t get to the byline and put balls into the box as often or with as much quality as Valencia. One player may be more skilful than the other, but it does not mean they are better for the system. It’s why if you did this line-up in a 442 like Utd play you could only really make a case for one of Wilshere/Fabregas (I would still take Fabregas), Sagna (although I really believe if Rafael carries on at this rate he will be the best right back in the world), possibly RVP although I would still take Rooney and Hernandez. I just think RVP only has 1 foot and is a massively overrated, can’t ever really remember him doing it in a big game either, that will probably be controversial on here but oh well, an opinion is an opinion.
FIG. Can you really come onto an ARSENAL site and expect anyone, apart from a MU fan, to agree with you?
OK, this is what all new bloggers have to do …
1. Read the article carefully
2. Accept that its all about opinion – nothing is definitive
3. Keep their comments polite and respectful
Anyone who fails in the above will be binned and the world will never read their pearls of wisdom.
Sorry Raddy but fletcher over wilshire? Have you gone mad? I know mancs who think fletcher is pony. As for the twat manc who says only two of our players would get into thier “squad” go back to school you muppet. I’m in vietnam at the moment. He probably lives here by the looks of things.
1stly – no doubt about it VDS would get in goal without question, and as you have to think about 38 games rather than just one or two I wouldnt even consider VP or Rio because of their injuries (good standins but not first choice). Its marginal between Fletcher and Wilshire only because the “holding” midfield position isnt a natural one for the latter (and you cant really have two playmakers as the only central midfielders)
Song may be marginally better defensively but offensively he doesnt come close imo
VDS
Rafael Smalling Vidic Evra
Valencia/Nasri Fabregas Fletcher Nani
Rooney
Chicharito
VP may be a very good player but he is never fit for anything like a full season so cant be considered (like Rio). Subs Rio, VP, Vermalen, Wilshire, Valencia/Nasri, Giggs, Scholes, PIG & Schezney
John,
The article is far from pointless because it has exercised the minds of manu and Arsenal supporters at a time when football news is sparse. At the moment I would say that the Arsenal fans are being far less clubcentric than manu.
To say that only 2 Arsenal players would get in the manu team is ridiculous. We are trying to have an adult debate that is not clouded by blind loyalty.
If manu were as superior as some of you say, they would be streets ahead of us in the league – as you know, if we win all our remaining games, the premiership is ours and there would be nothing manu could do about it.
John. Fine comment. As I keep saying – I am using Arsenal’s set up not MU’s, and as you so rightly say players have different roles. The question is how many MU players would get into the Arsenal team, not the other way round,
In our set-up Rooney has no place unless he replaces Nasri on the left.
why would anyones dream 11 have fletcher in it? he is a shit player. He runs around kicking people. useless.
gm, I’ve taken your comment off because it is more likely to make the debate descend into the sort of forum you’ve just said you don’t want us to be – if you get my drift?
GM. Good to hear from you. Hope you are having a fine time.
van der sah. Sagna -ferdinand – vidic – evra… Song – fabregas – diaby… Park – RVP – Walcott…, nani & rooney are over rated
Good idea but very bad choices sometimes. Iam an Arsenal fan and your keeper’s choice is laughable….willshire is better than Fletcher but fletcher is btter than song,,,,
Vandersar
Sagna ferdinand Vidich Evra
Willshire Fletcher Fabregas
nasri rooney
Vanpiersie
The manu supporters can be forgiven for not appreciating how good Szczesny is, they wouldn’t have scrutinised him in the same way we have. I can assure them all that he is the real deal and I would definitely prefer him to the ageing VDS who has been a great servant to their club and clearly knows the right time to retire.
Rasp – It is not totally ridiculous to suggest only 2 players from Arsenal would get in the United first team playing a 442. The Arsenal team has been built around a 433. Unless a massive tactical overhaul was to happen I really believe only 2 would, like I said maybe RVP.
Big Raddy – Fair enough. If I’m being honest and trying to be as unbiased as possible and play them in an Arsenal 433 I would go for:
VDS (I happen to think Sczeszny has shown potential, but if you’re gonna pick the team to play tomorrow then it has to VDS)
Sagna-Rio-Vidic-Evra
Fletcher
Wilshere Fabregas
Nasri Rooney (
RVP (I think he would play better in a 433 than Hernandez, Hernandez lacks any presence and I think he still needs a partner up with him. Still got a lot to learn, like Rooney learnt to play up top on his own last year)
FIG’s line-ups are hilarious, almost no choices being made at all in midfield or attack: Valencia-Fletcher/Fabregas-Scholes-Giggs/Nani, Hernandez-Berbatov/Rooney/Van Persie!
Scholes and Giggs would have been contenders 5 years ago, not now. The fact they still often get a game is more meaningful as a measure of how much the midfield at OT has stagnated.
The thing United have that we really lack is spirit: they don’t let their technical limitations get in the way, they love to succeed however they can, and often do so. If we are going to beat them this year and in the future, we need to aspire to add qualities like that to our technical superiority.
I understand why United fans doubt our choice of Szczesny but they don’t see him week in, week out. We know that this guy is the real deal and has every chance of reaching the level of the best keeper there has been in modern footbal, Peter Schmeichel. Van der Sar is very good, but he could never reach that level. I honestly would not swap van der Sar for Szszesny. And as for Kuszczak, you’ve got to be kidding!
TB9, no need to insult any player, as you represents MU supporter here. Arsenal fan will think that all MU fans were as dick as you if you continue to do so. You’re an embarrassment to your club.
The writer have pointed out that this team is set-up in Arsenal’s formation, not MU, and of course there will be a BS, this is an Arsenal site.
and your team will concede a lot of goal because there are no Defensive midfield to protect the back four.
why do people rate fletcher so high???? He is poor, he just runs around screaming at refs with his mate Rooney, he has no skill, he doesn’t score goals, he has no pace, wilshere is actually 200 times better than this northen monkey, sagna, wilshere, cesc, van persie, nasri, would all get in to this man who side
Morning Raddy and Rasp,
I was reallt interested in your views on this subject.
However, my heart sinks to think we are going to have another day of testosterone fuelled bollox along the lines of ‘my dad is bigger than your dad’ or ‘our player is better than your player’.
The majority of opposition fans who appear on rival blogs are there not to debate or discuss but simply to scream their puerile bile at the ‘enemy’.
Sorry Raddy/Rasp but that’s something none of us can do anything about. Good luck!
I rarely comment but i just had to.John-rvp never does it in big games?LMAO.barca recently, against chavs, mancs, city, spuds and countless other occassions.its also a myth that rvp has only 1 foot;if that was the case the volleyed goal against wolves, against liverpool in 08/09,against inter in the Emirates cup and countless other goals with his chocolate leg are goals a right footed player would be proud of.
An interesting article.
But how can you leave Wayne Rooney out of the team. Even in Barca, he’s sure to start. Also Nani is terrific; absolutely superb. Love it or hate it, it’s pleasant to watch Rafael play than Sagna.
Hi RA.
It would be nice if both sets of supporters could treat the debate as a fantasy team rather than geting upset that this one or that one hasn’t been included.
We’re all playing Football Manager today and we are building an Arsenal team that plays as a 4-3-3 looking at which United players we might want to include in our first team.
Seems to me that there is no need for any insults to be thrown from either side.
Red Arse, as I said the other day, I’m just the janitor, its you guys who are driving the blog.
Surely jame at 11.06 has alienated most fans of both clubs: Diaby and Park??! Brilliant!
(I actually quite like Park, a real pro, always works hard, often scores in big games, esp against us…. But he certainly doesn’t get into a combined team. The less I say about Diaby the better, else RA will tell me off again.)
RA. Sadly, it means a day of moderating. It was my fault for putting Man Utd on the tags which means (I think) that the post will appear on the MU Newsnow feed.
Mea Culpa.
But what it does show is how blinkered MU fans are.
TB9 beat me to it. I was wondering how one of the best midfielders in the world was left out of the list and the comments. Scholes is better than any of the midfielders. As was said, this is not about potential but about current skills, and Scholes is still the best IMO.
I don’t think Scholes would start ahead of Wilshere in an Arsenal team though.
Raddy, I disagree re the United fans who’ve posted: John and Hugo for example have been pretty reasonable. As for the others, we’ve seen much worse from other clubs’ fans when they’ve visited.
Fletcher? Really?
If he was English would Capello be building the England team around him? Wilshire is already miles ahead of him in Passing, vision and desire. I know I’m biased and find it difficult to talk about them (the mancs) without descending into insults but really fletcher?
I’m amazed at the faith shown in Scholes. A useful squad player, sure, little more than that these days.
Raddy – we play with 11 don’t we – 4-2-3-1
K-TR7 – Anyone can score a dream goal with their weaker foot. Heck I’ve seen my mate curl one in to the top corner with his left foot on a Sunday afternoon when all he normally does is stand on it. I don’t believe he does it in big games no. Barca? Absolute goalkeeping howler from Valdes, got himself sent off (admittedly harshly) in the second leg. City? Drew 0-0 at home and beat them 3-0 away when they had Boyata sent off after like 10 minutes. Just checked RVP wasn’t even playing in that game. Chelsea? You beat Chelsea 3-1 yes, RVP didn’t score, and Chelsea were in the middle of their worst run for years. Utd? You lost 1-0 and RVP was a sub. I don’t see overwhelming evidence to suggest he does it in big games. But that’s besides the point of this article….
Having a great time BTW Raddy. Staying with a supermodel in a huge apartment in Ho Chi Minh. It’s a bit humid here though. I think the game is live here on Saturday night on star channel so I may even get to see the game. fletcher
I think that some people are forgetting the need for balance in the team. The best team will not necessarily comprise the 11 best footballers, but the best blend of skill, muscle, tenacity, pace etc etc. Theo and Arsh have not been mentioned by anyone so far and yet they both have the potential to destroy teams.
Well peaches, we might as well start with 10 men, christ knows the referees find a way of making it that way without much difficulty; e.g., Kos vs Liverpool, van Persie vs Barca, Diaby vs Newcastle, all joke red cards this season. By comparison Neville and Scholes seemed/seem incapable of being sent off.
I think the point about Fletcher is that he brings a lot of blood and guts to the manu team though he’s not particularly talented.
John: “Anyone can score a dream goal with their weaker foot” – quite right, and in Rooney’s case, with his shin.
Raddy – it could be worse, you could have written Spurs comparison
then again, they cannot be seriously compared to the mighty Arsenal
26may
Peaches
GM. Not a fan of HCM City. Much prefer the deep South or the North, but my, you live the high life!
26may1989 – lol even i laughed
Evonne. It is my plan to do just that, and possibly a Chelsea and MC, as well. Maybe not this season but perhaps over the summer break.
Shhhhhh Evonne, Raddy’s probably saving that one for a couple of weeks time
It’ll be lovely, I’ll stick the moderation on or it’ll be nervous breakdowns all round
Raddy/Rasper,
I meant no criticism guys, just resigned to the ritual abuse that occurs whenever a rival team gets mentioned.
26, is right in that so far comments gave not been too bad, let’s hope it stays that way.
Hi KT,
26. Anyone who says that only Fabregas would get into the MU is blinkered. No two ways about it.
But you are right, I should have inserted the word “some”
Raddy – I was just saying
but maybe 26may is right and we should just start with 10
fine writing BR
my teams are based on if they would play tomorrow.
4.4.2
VDS
Sag, Ferd, Vidic, Evra
Nani, Fabregas, Song, Nasri
Rooney Rvp
4.3.3
VDS
Sag, Ferd, Vidic, Evra
LJW Song Fab
Rooney RVP Nani
What was the last team to win the league without using a 4.4.2 system? If we don’t win it this season then i think we should change our formation or at least consider it as plan B.
I’m off now see you all later.
(I’m with my wife Raddy. My life isn’t that much of the high life)
tommystout at 11.39: “What was the last team to win the league without using a 4.4.2 system?” Chelsea 2010.
Raddy – you are a brave man!! I cannot wait
thanks 26m, shows how much i watch the other teams?
thought they played 442?
GM,
“Staying with a supermodel”. Come in No 5!
Hi Tommy,
Your teams for 4:3:3 and 4:4:2 would both get my vote, but there is merit in other suggested combinations too.
I think Park would be worth a mention, and the Little Pea guy seems to have a nose for goal. I’m not sure he has been mentioned yet, but our meerkat, comrade Arshavin, is definitely a game changer on his day too.
Well tommy, to be fair, it did sometimes become a 442, when Anelka pushed up, but for the most part it was 433, with horseface cutting in from the wing.
BR,
Wow BR. Fuse alight!
Ferdinand and Vidic and stuff I get, but Rooney? Come off it!
RR darren ‘kick people’ flecther ahead of Alex song as a holding midfielder, no chance
This is a fantasy article but this question is better in reverse, i.e. how many Arsenal players would break into Man Utd’s starting eleven? Answer: Cesc Fabregas and Robin van Persie. It’s embarrassing how such an average Man Utd squad is so superior to Arsenal that every time the two sides meet, the gunners take a humuliating whipping. 2010-2011 should have been a trophy-ladden season at the Emirates if only obstinate Arsene Wenger had recruited a reliable goal-keeper, a rugged defender and another striker in the mould of Robin van Persie.
Hi Redders
I would consider Park every time if the said team were to play against the Arsenal every week
As for AA, not at the mo, he’s lost his mojo, and even getting stick from his own national’s. Something wrong there if the russkies have noticed it too.
I would only take Wilshere before Fletcher. What a
Legend Rocky was, blessed with incredible drive and technique a major screw up from GG selling him.Regarding the shirt Rocky is wearing,do anuyone know where to buy that replica ????
Moses, the answer is exactly the same to both questions
Danish, “Legend Rocky was, blessed with incredible drive and technique a major screw up from GG selling him.” I think that’s the first time we’ve ever agreed on anything.
Re shirts, check out retrofootyshirt.co.uk or football-shirts.co.uk or toffs.com.
The question that would divide most Arsenal fans would be: how many of today’s team would get into the Invincibles?
2 say rooney wil hav a place in barca team is mere fantasy and wishful thinking.rvp wil start in any team in the world.arshavin is more talented than nani and valencia rolled 2gether.fletcher and carrick wil strugle 4 a place in a sunderland team.2 consider pensioneers lyk giggs and scholes is not only outrageous but utter disgrace.varmalean is better than rio ,given his goal contribution.nani is nuisance he lacks vision.
Good point Danish – the point about Rocky has been missed by most posters.
I have only vague memories of Rocky, but he’s near my age and to think he’s been dead 10 years, brings the shortness of his life into sharp relief.
Rasp, good question: and my answer would be not many, even assuming the formation is the current one:
Szczesny
Sagna, Campbell, Vermaelen, Cole
Vieira, Gilberto
Bergkamp, Fabregas, Pires
Henry
Controversially no doubt, I’d still go for Szczesny between the sticks, and it’s tough to pick between Lauren and Sagna. Not having Kolo or Wilshere in there is difficult.
But whatever the combination, what a side it would be!
I was so upset when we sold Rocky. He was terribly treated by George Graham. Got a serious knee injury and then GG got rid of him. I recall that just before a World Cup Rocky had the chance of getting in the England side and GG deliberately dropped Rocky so he couldn’t get pitch time. It was at the time GG lost his mojo and got rid of Micky T and Rocky to replace them with journeymen.
Those who witnessed his performance against Everton in the Carling SF in 1988 will never forget what a fine player he was. That night was one of the very best Highbury nights and Rocky was everywhere including scoring a goal of true genius.
I agree 26m. A lot of supporters have been surprised that AW says this is his strongest squad ever. It may be true about the squad, but is it his strongest first team ever i.e. are today’s first 11 better than the Invincibles …. you appear to think not and I would agree.
Afternoon- great concept for an interlull article Raddy! *doffs cap*
I find very little to fault in TommyStout’s line ups and suggestion that Park and Hernandez would be knocking on the door of both. Liked Johns observation about our lack of true wingers too- a subject close to my heart.
Moses “another player in the van persie mold”? They broke the mold when they made him mate-unique, a special talent! Or do you see someone in world football with similar attributes?
Absolutely Rasp, the Invincibles’ first team is simply the best Arsenal side I’ve ever seen. The only teams in English football I’ve seen to compare are the great Liverpool side of in the late 1970s to mid 1980s and the Golden Generation United side.
But I do agree with Wenger that the overall squad today is stronger – when you think that behind that great first 11 were the likes of Reyes, Cygan, Wiltord, Jeffers, Aliadiere and an ageing Keown, and compare that with the squad today, I can see why Wenger says what he does about hte squad today. The question is: will this generation realise their potential? And can the key players stay fit long enough to do so?
26m, no question, the Invincibles was the best team ever to play in the premiership and included (IMO) the two best players ever to play in the premiership. I appreciate Giggs has been an unbelievably consistant and top performer but he does not compare with Henry or Bergkamp in terms of genius.
Agreed re Henry and Bergkamp, when I think back to my formative years in the 1970s and 1980s as an Arsenal fan, it’s astonishing to think we had just one of those two, but to have them both in the same team defies any expectations the young me could have had.
The fly in the ointment of the Invincibles is that they never cut it in European football. They seemed ideally built for it but often went out with a whimper. The 2006 CL Final was great (and tragic) of course, but the side was already being taken apart by then, in preparation for the new stadium project.
Carlito, if you’re around, can you give us the inside knowledge on Swedish teenager Kristoffer Olsson who we are apparently about to sign?
Greetings from The Busby Way, just wanted to say nice piece even if I don’t agree with a number of your selections!
Always good to see new innovative ideas for blogs and I’ll be sure to check in on your site in the future for more United related pieces.
Chudi,
I cannot tell you how pleasant it is to read your comment. We support different teams but you seem a true football fan.
Well done, as far as I am concerned you are welcome back anytime.
BR
When I read the headline of this post my immediate thought was “Brilliant!” I love this stuff – playing hypotheticals with other teams’ line-ups or past Arsenal line-ups.
And, although I know not every AA regular likes posts that end up bringing in opposition fans, I think it can be really interesting.
For the most part, the Manc fans posting on here have made sensible and reasonable comments and raised some very good points albeit usually though ManU tinted glasses, just like most of us see things through Arse glasses (Glarses?).
I thoroughly enjoyed the post and almost all of the subsequent comments.
Of course, the one Man Utd player I would take without any hesitation would be…
Howard Webb
Afternoon. Nice words on Rocky. What a genuine guy and how sad that his life should be cut so short. Seeing his family in Cardiff shortly after was heartwrenching. Nice tribute from the club on the website today, which I have added to my blog… http://redandwhiteviews.blogspot.com
And I can’t comment today without mentioning the anniversary of Rocky Rocastle’s death.
He’s my avatar and the man whose name I took for my blogging identity.
Although he died tragically young, his courage, skills and personality are indelibly etched in the memories of all Gooners who saw him play.
Sadly missed Rocky. Never forgotten.
Hi Rocky,
Very true about poor Rocky Rocastle!
26,
Never let it be said I don’t have any sympathy for potential Mac users.
John Lewis are doing an online ‘special’ price for the Macbook Air. Discounted compared with their shop prices, blah, blah.
Apple MacBook Air, MC504B/A, Intel Core 2 Duo, 256GB, 1.86GHz, 2GB RAM with 13.3 Inch Display £1,326. There is a cheaper, lower spec job too.
No; I don’t work for JL, but they are a good outfit!
BR
In a 4-3-3 out of current Utd and Arse first team players my line up would be:
GK: Van der Saar (Chesney will be great, but he is still young and raw and, even in his short time as our number 1, has already made a blunder that cost us a cup).
FBs: Sagna and Evra (no real contest).
CBs: Ferdinand and Vidic. Perhaps if Verm had been fit this season he would have forced his way in, but as things stand you have to go with the best defensive partnership in the EPL.
MF: Song, Cesc, Wilshere. Song can do everything Fletcher does and more besides. How anyone can leave out Jack when the whole England team is being built around him amazes me (sorry BR).
Attack: Theo, RvP, Rooney
No place for Nasri, which was a difficult call. And I’ve gone for Theo and RvP on the basis of them being fit and playing regularly. In that case I think Theo shades it over Nani, despite the stats.
I suppose this does seem like a team selection through my Glarses.
Not a bad shout Rocky, but I would reluctantly go for Nani over Theo, as I don’t think Theo is a ‘real’ winger.
But what do I know?
RA @ 2.46, many thanks, you’re a star!
Brilliant post
I have found an entry point. Song, Fabregas, Wilshere midfield. I agree with the Song — Fletcher argument, Fabregas needs no explanation but Jack over Nasri? It is true that the whole of the England team is being built around him but the whole of the French team is being built around Nasri and here’s the kicker…..Nasri has a goal threat about him while Wilshere has practically none…..everything being built around Wilshere is all fine and dandy but while this is going on we have a reduced goal threat and as a consequence important points are being dropped.
Wilshere will become more of a goal scorer, just as Fabregas has, it’ll come. But right now, fair comment London.
I thought the hypothetical post was based on this coming Saturday.
Good news bad news:
Good news, it’s official, Fab, Song and Theo are back for Saturday with Robin, Rambo and Bendy having a good chance to be involved also.
Bads news is Diaby’s back(I’m sorry I can’t get excited at him being available, yeah, my bad).
I know I am being mean, but I have just had a laugh at a comment, elsewhere, which fell foul of the ‘hanging/dangling participle’ rules.
–”The young manager watched his tall centre half training hard while picking his nose.”
Should have been — “the young manager while picking his nose, watched his tall centre half training hard”.
[I slightly changed the words as the originals were somewhat scatalogical.]
The fact I found it funny probably reflects more on me than the originator!
Oh well.
Hi CharyB,
Anymore ‘diabolical Diaby’ sentiments and I will have to take you to task, the same as 26!!
Oh right RedA – I think the phrase here is “Respectfully disagree” on our number 2.
I maintain he’s absolute garbage, and that’s the expletive deleted version of my assessment, but I won’t slate anyone who disagrees with my VHO.
CharyB,
I probably haven’t helped his cause by using the mellifluous cadences of the euphonic ‘diabolical Diaby’.
Shot myself in the foot, again.
You could have used “The dud-diaby” RedA
CharyB,
You may have noticed my amusement at the hanging participle clanger I mentioned earlier.
Well many years ago, I scoured the accounting SSAP’s for grammatical errors, like that above, just to lighten things up and to razz the ICAEW, but without success. It helped me memorize them tho’, so it was not totally fruitless, and perhaps the powers that be had plonkers like me in mind anyway!
I reckon they draft SSAP’s, SORP’s, FRED’s. FRIC’s and UITF edicts in the most hard to read and grammatically inept way possible RedA.
They go on the presumption that if you are a numbers person you are happy to see the language desecrated in order to give any of the ASB’s pronouncements sufficient gravitas.
That’s my theory anyway – probably pure bollocks though.
You may well be right CharyB. I blame lawyers, of course, for drafting them in such a way as to make them incomprehensible. [Where's that 26?]
In the US the IFRS standards are still running alondside GAAP, GASB and FASAB in many States. Lovely!
My dreadful humour and accounting bollox seems to have driven off both the Mancs and our own lads, so I am taking myself off too, before someone blacklists me!!
Chary, Redders
What on earth are you two talking about? GAAPs, GASBs? FASABs? Like Bergkamp and RvP, it’s all double Dutch to me…
Rocky,
Best to ignore us!
I was just shutting down when I saw your comment and it reminded me that a few days ago, in my absence, I was described as a lothario!
I would just like to set the record straight, and you can be my witness.
Over the years I have pursued, flirted with and shmoozed many dozens of women, but I have not slept with one of them!!
Can’t remember her name for the minute.
Rocky, it’s bean counter speak – and I fear RedA has correctly predicted we’ve scared off our gooner mates and the mancs(always a result in my book anyway)
Redders
Chary
The Mancs have been fairly civilised today, but if, on a future occasion, rival fans are coming on here and being obnoxious, we now know how to drive them away:
Deploy the Accountants!
RA, me old mucker, you claim to have been scouring the “SSAP’s” for grammatical errors, and yet you deployed an apostrophe needlessly: there is no apostrophe in “SSAPs”. Am not sure which is sadder, debating accounting principles, or getting uptight about sodding apostrophes. Accountants and lawyers, as bad as each other.
Please, feel free to insult me, I deserve it.
Anyway, back to business: Diaby is beyond redemption, he has buckets of talent but seems to lack the mental strength to get the best out of it. Even with his bad luck with injuries, he should have done much more in an Arsenal shirt in his six years with the club than he has. Move him on, I say.
By the way, talking of Manchester, I went to see Elbow the other night – bloody marvellous. If only all Mancunians would stick to the music and ignore football, life would be much more pleasant.
RL
I started my work life as a Chartered Clerk in an Accountancy practice in Lincoln’s Inn Fields. What a dreadful couple of years that was! Then I found Rock n’ Roll.
I think I should have explained in the post that I was comparing a direct like to like with this MU team
VDS
Rafael Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Nani Carrick Fletcher Valencia
Rooney
Hernandez.
Therefore, Carrick would be right side MF and Fletcher left. It is a simplistic method but made sense when I wrote the piece.
If I were to choose a team based on 4-4-2, it would be
Szczesny
Sagna Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Song Cesc Fletcher Nani
RvP Rooney
with Nani free to switch wings.
which is a 6-5 MU bias, whereas my original team was 6-5 to Arsenal
26. You lucky fellow – I love Elbow and their new album is very, very good.
It was very, very good Raddy – the man Garvey is a star.
Am off to a musical experience of a different sort now, my daughter’s orchestra’s concert. Earplugs at the ready…..!
Evening all.
Rasp- no idea on Olsson I’m afraid. Having a Swedish Mum doesn’t even slightly qualify me to talk about young Swedish players!
26M “Please, feel free to insult me, I deserve it.” made me burst out laughing in my office and drew some strange looks! Don’t quite know why it tickled me!
I can only agree with this sentiment: “If only all Mancunians would stick to the music and ignore football, life would be much more pleasant.” So much top music from up there- Ian Brown is a hero of mine and Happy Mondays are still an inspiration for me. Shame about their football clubs
26,
Thank you for spotting the errant apostrophe.
The historic use of the old Germanic English genitive possesive case and contractions are the only times an apostrophe should be used.
It is also arguable that the ‘s’ at the end of SSAPs is not correct. It is not ‘principle’ that is plural, but ‘statement’ because there are a number of them.
Hence – Statement(s) of Standard Accounting Practice, SSAP. But as this is not euphonic and does not easily roll of the tongue, an unnecessary ‘s’ is added to make it so. [SSAPs]
I would take a draw on that, you sad old thing!!
Gulp, I meant practise in the 3rd para, not ‘principle’!
I have no principles ….. obviously!
Fools Gold quite appropriate…Manchester, music, football, it just works on so many levels.
Given the opportunity to take three players from the Old Toilet, it would be Vidic Fletcher and Rooney. If I was then asked if my decision was final, I’d then ask if I could trade them back in for some of Utds fighting spirit and winning mentality. If they said yes, then thats what I’d take.
That really is all that they have over us.
Brilliant work Mr Radders, quality article that got everyone talking and debating.
I love AA. New job prevents me from joining in during the day at the moment. Shame.
Guys, is it true that at ManU they have performance related bonus scheme? Is it just at Mancunia?
What about wenger for fergie
No way Maciek. Party of the pride of ARSENAL is having had very few scumbags associated with the club.
If Fergie wrote a manual on engendering fighting spirit, then I wouldn’t mind Arsene reading it, but no way would I swap our glorious leader for the man who paid £32m for Dimitar Berbatov.
Danglng participles, genitive possessives’s…lol
Only on ArsenalArsenal. Quality
Sharkey – why did you say ‘no way Maciek’? Are you Polish?
Alright Raddy, great thought provoking article….Dont some people just miss the point about a blog, its almost hilarious, but so sad…..
Anyway back to the article: I can see why you made some decisions, but I couldnt workout your rules for picking,so I am going for the best players in the squads if all were available:
Van Der Sar (chez pushes all the way)
Sagna Vermaelen Vidic Evra (that hurt)
Song Wilshere
Nasri Fabregas Rooney (walcott pushes all the way)
Van Persie
Now that team would be some team……….
Harry. Given a different system my choice would be my 5.13 comment – we are only one/two players apart
Thank you all for the kind words and a healthy debate.
I have been serving my penance today for abandoning the wife this Saturday. My duty was fence painting. As such I have missed the fun here today.
For my tuppence:
VDS
Sagna Koscielny Ferdinand Evra
Cesc Wilshere
Rooney
Nani. Hernandez. Theo
Chose Van Der Saar for experience and Kos as I think he is better on the ground and at reading the game than Vidic.
I’ve obviously cheated a bit to get others in but I’m basing it on an ideal 4-3-3 that could possibly beat and definitely worry Barca’s current team. The pace wide would be able to exploit the missing full backs and Hernandez appears to have the Lineker like ability to be in the right place at the right time.
As for Chary and RA’s accounting chat I am glad I no linger have to deal with that stuff having left Year End Accounts and audit behind so I don’t have to keep up with that stuff.
It did remind me of an interview I had at Enron though when I left my first job (left is a kinder term for being asked to leave for failing ACA finals twice). My job at Enron would have been in US accounting team, I explained that I knew nothing of US GAAP, I was told it was ok as Enron were so big they dictated US GAAP, they also pointed out Andersens partners office. This was about a year before the holes appeared in their figures.
Ticket for Sat sorted !!!
See you guys around 4.30 I reckon
GiE – agreed, accountancy is as boring a job as they come; still my dream life of bass player for a metal band in the autumn/spring and fast bowler for a county cricket side in the summer never worked out.
Cześc Evonne you ticket stealing ratbag
. Jak się masz..??
My dyslexia made think that MickeyK was Maciek. Maciek was a Pole (plank?) from ‘the other site’ that I used to blog on. Or at least I thought was ‘blogging’ until I came here !!!
I’ll see you Saturday also S Sure – just an annoying Friday at work to get out of the way first.
I’ve already met yo Chary, you’re not on either of my lists for Sat. One each for people to greet, and people to beat.
Oh and I’ll also have some harsh words (in Polish?) for Evonne, for stealing that spare ticket of 26′s that I had my eye on. First it was just our jobs…now its tickets from life long Gooners !! Shocking.
Feels like being turned away at a night club door S Sure: “You’re not on the list”, LOL.
It was the Burnley game last year I think i met you, you had your son there.
Is Evonne polish/going to be there also ?
Looks like we’re well into double figures for a pre match drink up.
Accountancy. The epitome of a means to an end for me. Decent pay, pretty much guaranteed to always be in work. Simple really.
I finished my last contract on 18th Feb, started new role on 14th Mar. I was disappointed to even have a three week gap, should have been none! Even one of those weeks was only due to pre-employment screening before I could start.
Accountancy, I don’t exactly love it, but I really can’t say that it does me any harm.
Nite all
Yep Burnley. My alzheimers had it fixed in my mind as Brum for some reason. Went to that earlier in the season, or the season before. I only realised as I found the e-receipt for it when booking this one.
I’m only 44. I don’t like to think about my ‘issues’ getting worse !
Nite all
No wonder I feel at home here Accountants everywhere!!
I’m still an Accountant Chary, just not dealing with the end of year anymore. My business slogan is “taking care of business” caring sharing monthly management accounts.
44 too also, but issues are no better.
GiE – too true, accountants everywhere.
Night all.
Clearly AA stands for Arsenal Accountants then
Nite all ……. nearly Saturday
Certainly explains why so many of us are enamoured by the prudence model set by the club.
Listened to Tuesday Club Q&A with AW, Keown and Winterburn, very interesting listen. One stat Arsene produced is worth remembering. The average age of the Arsenal team starting in 1st leg against Barca was 23, Barcas average age was 27. Look at the level we are playing at now and take it forward four years…..
[...] How many Man Utd players would get into Arsenal’s First Team? I spend much time discussing football with fans of other teams. Inevitably we play the “but he would never play in [...] [...]
Night all that have gone and morning to those arriving….
Just got in from work!!
Raddy: Yeah seen your 5.13, earlier didnt have a chance to read comments, had only popped home for 1hour….But I hadnt read the daily post…..
SharkeySure: Looking forward to meeting up, will be there from 4!!
Who’s on the meet list?
Why do people keep on putting ferdinand in their teams, so over rated, I’d put him on par with Cygan!! ALthough thats a bit harsh on Pascal, now there is a question, how on earth did wenger get 2million for him when we only brought him for 1million, genius!!
Lol Harry re Cygan.
For me Ferdinand is the strongest of the two United centre backs they look worse when he is not there.
The list as far as I can work out

I’m out today, then setting off early tomorrow, so look forward to meeting many of you for the first time. I anticipate some atrocious behaviour, and not just from Chary!
Has there ever been a bigger blogsite gathering?
I also expect some expert advice on Tax Dodging!
Sharkey – I did not steal your ticket!!! Ask Peaches and 26may!! I told them to offer it to you first!!! Oh no, I hate upsetting anyone
What’s the earliest anyone’s getting to the tavern? Not sure I can stay off the beers till 4!
Evonne,
You shall be “corrected” tomorrow.
Carlito,
I will be in Finsbury Park soon after 1. Might try and meet anyone for a bite. Peaches has my mobile number.
Peaches,
You can give my mobile number to anyone meeting up.
Right, off now. See you all tomorrow.
Mickeyk,
Chin up, 4-0 won’t feel so bad as you imagine
Advice needed.
Not sure whether to take a down jacket that has seen me through this never ending Nordic winter or a lighter coat. And if I will need to be layered up.
How is the London weather, because stats mean nothing (see Denilson)?
BR,
Guess what, positively tropical for you and damp!
Look forward to meeting you.
A demain.
Offski.
Mickydidit – oh no, oh no, no – drinks on me?
Morning chaps, if the trains are ok I’ll be at the tavern for 3.30 – I almost get the feeling we should hav ename tags(Peachy/Evonne excepted for obvious reasons) as I doubt I’ll be able to remember so many new names very easily.
Chary – excellent idea! Real names or avatars?
I hear there has been some ridicule directed at middle aged blokes wearing the team colours – oh dear, I look forward to hoots of derision as I will be sporting my Invincibles home kit.
Sad I know, but then I will be wearing my 1991 “Ram it down” tour T-shirt to the Judas Priest concert in July so I’m being consistent at least.
Radders, it’s fairly mild at the moment and probably dry for tomorrow albeit overcast mainly.
I think it’ll be easier to use avatar names Evonne – I’ve only just about been able to remember Peachy’s real name – I keep forgetting Raspers one and that’s after being told it a year ago.
Chary – shall we ask Peaches to think of something, she is a clever girl …..
Evonne….no worries I believe you, although thousands wouldn’t. !!
I like causing a bit of trouble sometimes.
In any case I’ve got another one now, and I won’t have to sit with 26′s hand on my knee for 90mins either !!
Good idea Evonne, but I think Peachy has so much on her plate – I think it’s best just to lager her up so she can relax.
Someone must have a badge making kit for their kids…..get to work
Cannot believe you left me out! LOL
I am planning to be there around 1445-ish. Look out for a Jonny Depp lookalike and I will be the ugly one next to him.
See you all tomorrow.
Yes, see you tomorrow Brigham.
