Arsenal Untested ….A Friendly Stroll in The Park

SC Neusiedl 1919. 0 Arsenal 4.

With yet another good workout satisfactorily completed the thoughts will turn to The Emirates Cup, where we might really begin to judge our squad at a much higher level, but I will leave that for another time.

The first thing that struck me last night was the stadium, the infamous Sportzentrum Neusiedl. Even allowing for the fact that Neusiedll were being compared to a Conference side, it appeared that someone had quickly assembled a pitch in a far flung park somewhere in eastern Austria. Nevertheless there was a capacity crowd of 2500, amongst which I must have spotted at least 400 kids happily enjoying their ice creams.

Back to more serious matters. We had learnt earlier in the day that Sol had finally decided to leave us for the heady heights of Newcastle and I’m sure all of us wish him well and even at the ripe old age of 36, I feel it would have been beneficial to have him still in our squad. This was further compounded with the sad sight of Djourou leaving the field after barely 20 minutes, and this may turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as the need for a centre back is now a must.

I won’t give you a match report as it wasn’t really a game, but in the first half Nasri shone way above anyone else and looked sharper than ever. Wilshere also had a fine first half and was reintroduced midway through the second half. I hope the boss was thinking that the lad is now ready to be an active member of our first team squad.

Frimpong, after a slow start impressed yet again, and it was as nice to see Carlos score with his customary chip, as it was to see Theo score and Chamakh cooly slotting in his first goal for the club from the penalty spot.

Many were surprised to see Almunia start let alone as captain, but I wouldn’t read too much into that. For those who were not aware, Rosicky was withdrawn 10 minutes before the start.

Generally we still look vunerable in defence and again our crossing needs to improve dramatically. This is a real issue for me, but on the other hand we will see a radically different line up for the first game at Anfield. Arshavin is a canny player and one gets the impression, not for the first time, that he is saving himself for the games that really matter.

All in all maybe a few questions were answered for the boss and finally it was nice to see Gibbs back in the team, though he may well need a good few weeks to regain his sharpness. JET for a big lad had a very compact game, but I doubt he is quite ready for the first team, and a word for Mannone who has hardly been mentioned lately, a good penalty save and basically nothing much else to do.

Roll on Saturday and A.C.Milan.

Thanks for the report Kelsey, i never read anything in to these austria games and i’ll be more interested to see the teams that are fielded in the emirates cup….
after all yesterdays debating it seems like mertsaker is the target – please please please.

  2. Rasp says:

    Nice report kelsey,

I hope (but not maliciously!) that the injury to Djourou will be the final prod in the ribs for the boss to make him splash out on Mertesacker. Without the big German we will do well next season but concede the archetypal set piece goals, with him, we could win the Premiership.

  3. Morning all

Thanks kelsey for your account – I thought JET was fantastic but where can he play – he’s much better than Theo – I’ll go and wash my mouth out

Mertesacker – can it really be happening – I really really hope so

  4. Rasp says:

JET looked like a cross between ‘the good Diaby’ and Vieira yesterday. This lad has a future with the club and may just have the mentality to step up to first team football and surprise everyone.

  5. Joe says:

Dude, sort out your background please!
Black text on red? Hard to read ….

  6. Rasp says:

Very quickly, arsenal.com has come out with “Djourou should be fit for the weekend” this morning …. but will he be fit for the season??????

Its a risk we shouldn’t take. Its not about misguided fans playing Championship Manager any more, its about common sense!

  7. GunnerPete says:

Things that struck me watching the game last night were….Frimpong & Jet are ready as is Jack…but how is it that two International full backs have never learned how to cross a ball??? After this match I got out our 1989 video and watched the crosses…we are now officially the worst crossers in the league.

Kosser & V are good together, but Theo is average when out wide. Nasri is perfect to fill Cesc’s boots and Nordveit is ready for the first team.

If there is one thing that has stayed the same sadly it is our two passes to many around the box! I even got the feeling that Lansbury was dropped because he shot from outside the box against Sturm.

Seeing DJ go off…..I pray that AW is not going to play last minute games again this period…ie; trying to get another million off the price of whoever by delaying tactics? As a UK gunner of many many years I still yearn for some UK grit…Jagielka, Hart & Dorans would be great for this squad but I expect a few cheapo Africans instead.

  8. Livers says:

    Morning chaps……..

    Slooooow summer….need keeeeeeeper soon

  9. Rasp says:

    Joe @ 9:49,

We don’t have black text on a red background, it must be a problem your end?

  10. kelsey says:

I seem to have drawn the short straw.

Keep to your day job, they said.

  11. kelsey says:

    Actually Rasp,

re your comment to Joe, I sometimes get the same problem, though it only lasts for perhaps twenty minutes.I guess it may be a WordPress problem.

  12. RockyLives says:

Thanks Kelsey – I’ve not been able to watch these friendlies so it’s good to get a reliable report.
With the news of Sol going to the Toon you’ve got to think AW will make at least one more CB signing of substance (Metersacker or Jagielka both fine as far as I’m concerned).
I’m still expecting a flurry of activity in the next couple of weeks.

  13. kelsey says:

    Hi Rocky.

It was hard to really give a detailed match report as primarily we were seeing various combinations of players who wouldn’t all regularly feature.

I have read various reports today about Metersacker, one saying he was in london and the other that Gazidis had flown to Germany.

I am with you on expected activity still to come, maybe not a flurry.

If you consider the players that have now left of which all i believe except for Eduardo were out of contract, it still amounts to a lot of money being saved on wages when totted up over a year.

Almunia is on 50k a week for example,so perhaps when one looks at the transfer fee of any one in mind, one has to add on the wages to get a true cost of a player.

  14. irishgunner says:

Afternoon all – where’s our new CB??

  15. RockyLives says:

In CB terms we’ve had: Going OUT: Gallas, Silvester and Sol.
Coming IN: Koscielny, Djourou who sort of counts as an incomer (but his susceptibility to injury must be a worry).
Which means probably only one more CB to be signed.
    Plus a ‘keeper.
    Plus a CM.
    I hope…

  16. barumgooner says:

Hello All. So we now officially need a CB with Sol going and Mertesacker looks like the favourite, we will hopefully start the season with TV, LK, JD, Mertesacker and Nordveit…I’d be quite happy with that compared to this time last year when we had an unproven TV, Gallas, Silveste and an injured Djourou (although It looks like that may be the case again this year).
Nice report Kelsey and thats one crazy goal celebration Irish. I dont know if its a sign of getting old but I think these choreographed routines are all getting a bit strange, i can just picture players on the training pitch going through the steps…..alrite yep Im an old fart.

  17. irishgunner says:

Barumgooner – ha ha in all fairness its the Icelandic league so they’re probably have to do something crazy like that to get noticed

  18. barumgooner says:

fairplay Irish. Is is pretty inventive. So who’s your bet for GK and CB’s for 2010/11 then ?

  19. RockyLives says:

If it’s the Icelandic league it’s probably some crazy reference to the Cod War.

  20. irishgunner says:

Barumgooner – To be honest I’m not confident about a new goalkeeper coming in anymore. I think Wenger is looking at one of our 4 keepers at the moment to play. I’d not be shocked to see Chesney being given a shot.

I definitely think he’ll bring in a CB. I’ve always liked Jageilka, he’d be a good signing.

  21. irishgunner says:

    Rocky – The Cod War??

  22. RockyLives says:

Irish – Showing my age. In the 1970s Britain and Iceland were involved in a dispute over fishing rights in the North Sea. Gunboats were sent, shots were fired. Iceland won.

  23. barumgooner says:

I think you could be right Irish. I cant see AW giving up on any of the younger three keepers, if anybody does come in it will prob be a stop-gap such as schwarzer and if the price is right that may still happen depending on what we can get for Almunia. I think Mertesacker could come in now though. He seems perfect for us and prop cheaper than Jagielka. It’d be nice to get Richards aswell but thats probably a bit too optimistic.

  24. irishgunner says:

Rocky – that was interesting, never heard of the Cod war before.

Barumgooner – Mertesacker is a good defender, prone to errors but I certainly welcome him, he had a good World Cup although i think Friedrich outshone him.

  25. Rasp says:

    Afternoon all,

There is a deafening silence coming out of the club as regards new CB signings …. to me that means its not gonna happen :(

barumg – would you like to be re-named in the list of authors as that andy guy has gone missing ;)

  26. barumgooner says:

True Irish. One things for sure, the season is getting close and we are at least one man short. With the sale of Edu we must have at least 20m left to spend. Surely he’s not going to save his pennies again ! Is he ???????????

  27. irishgunner says:

Rasp – stop being negative mister  … a new center back is most definitely coming Barum, one has to be. It is literal madness if he goes into the season with our defence as it is.

  28. barumgooner says:

haha. Thanks Rasp. Hopefully my new name is a bit more memorable.

  29. irishgunner says:

” But Clichy believes that progression at the back will also help Arsenal going forward and he expects Wenger will bring in only the best players to improve the side.” – from Arse.com

  30. Brian says:

Apparently the name of the guy being “reeled in” translates to something involving salmon. The PK goal was a game-winner, so the over-the-top celebration may have been merited? As someone else said, it _is_ Iceland, after all. When was the last time, aside from scrolling through LiveScore.com, we checked in on their league?

  31. barumgooner says:

Sol going has forced the issue now I think. If we dont buy this time it will be the most disappointing tw under AW. Thats not a slur against the new guy purely numbers. We cannot enter the season with our only backup being JD, HN and Song (song being far too important in cm)

  32. irishgunner says:

Brian – Never ha ha fair play to them, they’ve got themselves a few minutes of fame

  33. irishgunner says:

Totally agree with that last comment Barum regarding the numbers at CB.

  34. RockyLives says:

There will be three more senior arrivals this summer.
    Believe!

  35. dandan says:

Nice write up kelsey….. It really was just a training kick about, AA couldn’t be bothered could he, but Jack is going to get some cards this year he has definitely graduated from the Bolton school of tackling.

We will learn more this weekend i think…….

Rasp as I said yesterday I have put your house up for grabs to the poster who names the new centre back we have coming to join us. In the case of more than one winner his fee and shirt number will be the tie breakers.

  36. Rasp says:

 ;) … these are my facial expressions after reading your messages of hope ….. awwww thanks for trying, but unfortunately I am probably going to be proved correct.

We don’t buy players without there being a lengthy preamble so the club had better start making some noises soon or the best we will get will be a £2-4m back-up defender.

  37. barumgooner says:

For a chance to win Rasps house I will go for Micah Richards 5.5m. Im not sure what number is spare so gona say 15.

  38. irishgunner says:

Rasp – you keep rolling your eyes like that they’ll get stuck looking at the sky… what my mamma always says

  39. irishgunner says:

I’ll go for William Gallas on a free and number 9.

  40. Rasp says:

Haha irish, I said Gallas yesterday … that would conform with my prediction.

Believe me, we (the club) are saving money for future commercial investments – probably the building of the Queensland Road development so that we can then extend the ground to further increase our income streams.

  41. irishgunner says:

Well if we’re both right do I just move in with you Rasp as opposed to own your house?

  42. RockyLives says:

It’s going to be Jagielka, £14m, number 18.
    Get the keys ready Rasp.

  43. Rasp says:

That’s a very good idea irish, can you cook? ;)

  44. Rasp says:

I’m just leaving work, but I would be very grateful if someone could possibly explain to me why Cesc and RvP will not be fit to play against Pool – they were fit enough to play in the WC final and then have a month’s holiday. This is complete madness unless they picked up an injury from a sun lounger on holiday in the Caribbean. Why don’t we just give pool the 3 points now?

  45. irishgunner says:

    Yes :)

Can you pay all the bills?

  46. irishgunner says:

    I don’t see why they can’t play, they surely aren’t injured….again!

  47. barumgooner says:

Its fair to say they probably wont be match-fit but who will be ? I’m sure they will be in the squad even if they dont start.

  48. GunnerN5 says:

The last thing we need is for them to play when they are not match fit and then get injured – I’d sooner lose the Emirates cup.

  49. irishgunner says:

GunnerN5 – Wenger hinted they may be “short” for the Liverpool match not the Emirates Cup.

  50. Rasp says:

I couldn’t give a hoot who wins he Emirates Cup, but I do have a problem leaving out our 2 best players for a game against one of the other big sides. There will be plenty of players in the matches the day before the pool game who will have played in the WC.

  51. barumgooner says:

I can understand RVP being rested for a couple of extra weeks, he wasn’t right going into the wc and the last thing we want is yet another setback for him especially as we now have a capable stand-in. Cesc however is a different story, he wasn’t exactly over-used during the wc so there really is no reason for him not playing. Its probably just manager talk trying to suggest we will be weaker than we actually are.

  52. dandan says:

AW may want Cesc to have his first game at home so he realises how much the the fans are behind him, not giving him the crap he would get from a first game at LPool

  53. kelsey says:

I agree with barumgooner, and besides torres will be out, gerrard if not knackered will be in disgrace, their manager will be under a lot of pressure from everyone and that lifts the pressure off us.

i can recommend several anti depressants short or long term Rasp. ;)

  54. dandan says:

The way Nasri and LJ are playing AW might give Cesc a rest anyway

  55. dandan says:

You ok Kelsey, I have been at the hosp gymn am bloody knackered lol

  56. kelsey says:

me the same dandan, the 8 hours of bowls over 2 days has caught up with me.catch up with you tomorrow.

  57. dandan says:

OK matey, look forward to that, have a good night

  58. I think Cesc will want to play – he’s our captain and we’ve suffered a long drawn out campaign from Barcelona to steal him away from us – he’ll play.

Arsene has only said he’ll see because he hasn’t seen them yet – they don’t return until the 5th August but they are fit sportsmen and should be raring to go.

  59. charybdis1966 says:

Hi all – ha! The home kit won’t now be available till August 26th ! Well done Nike.

  60. tommystout says:

thats my FL team in ppl…. funny working out who is who!

  61. London says:

    Morning Kelsey

I know you will be the first to read this, good match summary another quality post in an impressive line that in my humble opinion gets better each time.

I am in the States so I have been a bit quieter than usual. The one story out there that fascinates me is Cesc’s anticipated absence at Anfield.

If I were managing this situation and my brief was to combat a potential negative reaction caused by Barcelona’s antics over the last few months I would put out the same story then wait for people to start missing the magnificent talent that they have started to taking for granted and then, on the day, Capello style, I would have Fabregas lead the boys out…….the traveling fans would go wild and so would I from the bar I will be watching from on 14th between 2nd and 3rd.

Have a nice day as they say from this side of he pond.

  62. kelsey says:

    Yes you were right London.

    Thanks for your comments.

This may sound a bit cryptic but take a look at this, I found it had an usual connection to our blog.

  63. tommystout says:

good morning all… getting excited now about the emirates cup . can’t wait to see the boys again.

  64. i know new shirt should arrive today

  65. charybdis1966 says:

RSD – you’re referring to my 9.40pm last night. It seemed too good to be true, a decent home kit and they have to postpone its launch by a month.

  66. no that just the shorts not the top

  67. shorts not shirts

  68. kelsey – if you’re about, loved the link

  69. Morning all
